theoretically it could work, although extremely improbable.

The wire could be running through some really sensitive explosive, like AP. For it to detonate, the wire would have to have high electrical resistance, not copper wire, to increase temperature, and in the end ignite the explosive.

No reason to make it that way though, just makes it really unstable, and at the same time prone to failure, as the battery very likely will run out before achieving ignition temperature. And since the wire is long, the resistance in the wire will be distributed over a larger area, meaning the heat would also be distributed over a larger area, draining more battery, for less effect on ignition.

But, a person able to make a sensitive explosive like AP, would also be able to make a primitive pipe bomb that would function properly.

Most likely, it's a fake. Or a "bomb" made by someone who has absolutely no idea of what he's doing, like a 12 year old who watched a movie with "pipe bombs" and decided to make it himself.

The coil of wire was probably going to be a heating coil, in an attempt to get the gunpower to flash. The clock was not even an alarm clock, so it was never going to go off (and makes me suspect a false flag). The gauge of wire is huge and so the energy required to heat it would be much larger than any shitty battery array could have provided.
