If the urge is to shoot semi-auto, the easiest way to do it is to just get a handgun license. The normal Aussie pleb really has no chance of getting a Cat D license.

Pump-action .223 that takes Ar15 magazines like the Remington 7615.
It should scare antigunners far more than a pump action shotgun but they're too stupid to figure it out.
Lever shotgun is another option and has the media hysteria behind it. Cheaper than the R7615 too.
