A 16” AR built to milspec or better with a CHF barrel, an aimpoint PRO or Steiner P4xi, an arisaka or surefire light, and a blue force vickers sling is a great first rifle. Spend the rest on mags and ammo. I can’t specifically speak to ruger or S&W since I haven’t researched them at all since I build my stuff, but from the little I’ve heard, they should be fine. That said, you can build something better for about the same cost. If you can change your oil and your tires, you can build an AR.

Liking the vtac one but having that long excess tail might be weird. I've been using this vickers one for over a year and the webbing is still really stiff and the adjuster still feels cumbersome

it's fine. you don't want anything torqued onto the crown as it could affect accuracy

also, if it really bothers you, you can get in there with a pipe cleaner or something but it's really nothing to be concerned about.

My first AR was a ruger and a few thousand rounds later it's still running well. If you want a range blaster it's good stuff.
