What good is a tunnel with no entrances or traffic going in/ out. That's what the fucking imagery is used for. Given how utterly rock bottom morale within the Army and civilian support for the war were by the late '60's, trying to drag the war out another decade would have most likely resulted in full-blown mutinies and draft riots and rebellions at home.
Also, there would have been no money for a lot of the toys introduced in the late 70's/early 80's. Vietnam War had already pretty much ruined one round of equipment modernisation due to sucking up too much funding by that point, after all.
