The US hasn't seen a full scale conventional war in ages... Not even sure if Vietnam should count considering how much the US just sort of gave up there.
In the end I don't know.
Maybe it's the tales of old that keep people worshiping them. Tales of times where they actually did something rather than hike around in some middle eastern desert with no clear objective.
Same goes for the Airborne and Air Force... Nothing but shadows of their former selves.
Hell, even the Navy is in the same sinking boat as them when you compare it to the Coast "More Navy than the Navy" Guard.

honestly for me at least I wanted to serve to prove myself as a man, an initiation into adulthood, a trial by fire. The marines always had the image of the grunt, hard times, sucking, of being rough and getting the worst of it. that made it appealing because you knew the ones that got out were hard men. The other branches just put off the image of POGS.
