I have a 2 hunting rifles. An AR-15. A full sized pistol. A compact carry pistol. A hunting shotgun and a home defense shotgun. As well as an AR-10 for giggles. You could try handgun hunting or long range shooting with a scope on a larger caliber revolver. Either way if you truly want distinction you may as well choose something a step up from 357.

A 6" revolver will chuck a 125gr round at around 1700fps, while a 9mm will throw a 124 at about 1250 if we're talkign defensive rounds. When it comes to hunting though something like a 158gr JHP at 1500fps or 180gr at 1400fps are more common choices. Back when .357 was new to the market S&W made a point of advertising the round by having hunters use it to take every north american big game animal(including brown bear). It always managed to do the trick with proper shot placement. .357 magnum is a considerably more powerful round than 9mm and its nearly identical frontal area make it a truly great round for digging deep. in general consensus 9mm is a "good enough" round for defensive use, but most would consider it an unethical choice for hunting comparably sized game animals, while .357 magnum just manages to cross that line into being an ethical round for hunting medium sized game while technically being "good enough" for anything in NA. IMHO it's really in a different class in terms of performance with proper load selection, and just about any real world user of it will confirm that.

Yes, absolutely. I've never had overlapping rims, but I've definitely had to use my belt on the ejector rod to free stuck casings. Only had this issue with certain defensive .357 rounds, never .38 Special. Hornady Critical Defense (what I use for EDC) fits in just fine though. Same with Magtech .357.

Prosecutors in my state have gone out of their way to fuck people using "dangerous animal" rounds vs. people. I'd love to, but, also $$$/shot is an issue too - there's no lightweight training round to get gud with.
Part of that, though, comes from long barrels. You're not going to get a 3" .357 to hunt most game. Maybe a 4", but, good luck trying to CC a 4" barrel 5 or 6 shot unless you're built like an ogre.
