Pre 2007 '870s are GTG
just get a mossberg. the 870 magazine tube is silver soldered to the receiver so you cant replace it. also the ejector is riveted into the receiver so it is a bitch to replace as well
Probably your best bet. But for a good price I can see the trade in appealing, especially if OP wants a wood stock and a corn cob forend.
You should be able to find out how old they are by referencing a serial number guide. That will tell you.
I doubt police trade ins are new enough to he freedom group. I bet they are old enough to actually work. If it's in well fired condition and the action works it's probably fine.
Also, the QC issues with modern Remington 870s seem mostly limited to the Express versions - you don't see too many complaints about Wingmaster or Police variants even among the newer guns.
i did think about getting a mossberg but the prices are pretty decent on these and the corncob forend and wood stock are appealing
anything in particular i should be looking for in terms of shit that is most likely to be messed up on an old 870?
btw found pic related (in linked post) on their website. anything of note on the 4 examples?
bumping with some random cool shotgun pics
final pre-sleep bump in case anybody else has some input
I'll repost my question from the QTDDTOT thread here.
Anyone have any hot opinions on cheap coach guns or other cowboy-style shotguns they want to drop on me? I'm looking at Stoegers and Cimarrons but I've heard mixed things about both. Wondering if anyone has any experience with them and knows if one brand is better than the other or some models or better than others or if both are shit and I shouldn't spend less than $800 on a double barrel.
just got a S&W model 3000. cant wait to actually shoot it and make sure it works
Pretty much any police trade 870 is going to be pre-2007. Not much to check on a pump shotgun but for the 870 check inside the receiver to see if the ejector is loose or broken.
>anything to look for on old 870
Not really. The qc issues we are all familiar with didnt not come to be until long after those were manufactured. Those are of the era in which the 870 was legendary for ruggedness and reliability. It honestly makes me sad to see what they have become. I just got a vintage 70s or early 80s wingmaster and its action is so smooth its like glass.
I would buy the one on the right. Polished finish > matte . Personally
Gunbroker and obscure names are really your best bet. Go scour the internet for old and unrenowned manufacturers like Greener and look over gunbroker. They generally have tons of old fudds selling off quality doubles at low prices.
I want a sling for my Ithaca but I don't feel like buying a new barrel and stock for the proper attachment points. What do you guys think about a sling that just loops through the space between the barrel and the magazine cap, with a 3-point-style harness on the buttstock like pic related?
Would be a simple build with canvas or leather and to me it seems flawless. Don't see any reason why it wouldn't work fine.
My gun, it's a featherlight with a time-period cylinder bore 18.5in bbl. No clue where the owner got the barrel but it works fine so I have no desire to buy another just for a sling point.
Pic exactly related. Got one last month because I was really itching for a shotgun, never owned one before.
Mossberg 500, 12ga, 26" barrel, modified choke, some googling leads me to believe it was produced in the 80's. Remarkable condition for its age if so.
240 bucks out the door. How did I do? It's everything I wanted and I love shooting shit with it.
lowest i've seen for a used one at my LGS was around $220 and another for $200 in slightly worse condition at a gun show but i imagine yours was in pretty good condition so i'd say you came out fine.
