I need help, what's a good starter AK? not too expensive but reliable in use? Co-workers point me towards a PSAK47
Thoughts? opinions?

WASR don't buy american made aks thhey're shit

Do WASR's have any know issues to look out for?

First off, there's an /akg/ for this. Second, they are a bunch of retards that only like meme guns but an American airlines will be fine for 90% of the people out there who will only use it for range toys and safe candy. As long as you aren't mag dumping 1k rounds in a range trip and throwing it on rocks it's fine.

Building your own.

Make sure the sights aren't canted, that can happen sometimes.
Also make sure the receiver itself isn't canted.
Make sure it features the scope mount on the left side of the receiver.

Don't buy a PSA AK or a RAS47 or C39.
Don't pay more than $600 for a WASR.

Nah, you can fuck off, the RAS47 and C39 exhibits fucking soft bolts and receivers, that shit isn't ok ever.

I have a PSAK with about 1k rounds and it's fine desu

That is absolutely fucking nothing.
Get back to us at (before) 10k and tell us how many bolt shards you've got in your face.

Heard their current production gen3 AKs are pretty solid

Where do I find them for 600? The lowest I've seen then recently is 650 before shipping and transfer

Literally not retarded enough to let it get that bad. Headspace every 1k rounds and AKOU got to 5k fine. Someone's gotta test it and so far I've beat it to hell and back and fine.

Want a more trustworthy opinion on what AKs are good and affordable from people other than the AK fetishists in the /akg/ thread or the potential crayon eaters in this thread?
Try mishaco on YouTube he covers AKs on depth and has videos like "why you should buy foreign AKs instead of American" and he has videos that narrow it down from there. He also tells you price ranges and what's available and what's not.
It's complex but not too complex that it's a grind to sift through, he orients alot of his content around a buyer's guide And not just the history and mechanics.

After seeing some of his videos and owning a high end russian saiga and an older wasr AK myself my advice for a good balance of price and quality is a wasr or a zastava npap.
Npap's are controversial around here but mishaco did an in depth look at the controversy and broke down why an npap is a fine gun and which npaps are better than others.
With the now limited AK market it requires more savvy and some sacrifice to get an AK rifle that fits your personal requirements.

American? Like what an IO or Century with cast trunions? Dude no.

The front sight on my Saiga is slightly canted. But the front sight is windage and elevation adjustable and not hooded so it is as accurate and unobscured as a regular sight. It just looks off when you look at it from a different angle since the post seems to be too far to one side. It's still as accurate as I am.
If the rear sight is block is canted though... I don't think that can be worked around unless it's the slightest of cants. Maybe if you replaced the u-notch leaf sight with an aperature?

Akou also admited they sent him an unusually good rifle.

I got mine used for 500
Just look around

Alright, I thought you meant new.
I see used wasrs around that price sometimes but they're all underfolders and I don't think I want that for a first AK.

PSAK Gen 2 is a very good low tier AK.
Significantly less shit than any other American AK.

It requires a bit of savvy, certainly. Here are my tips from a guy who got a ban-era WASR for $550:
- Check Gunbroker, sure, but don't get your hopes up. It's an auction-based site, so prices tend to converge on around market value. When you add in shipping and transfer fees, it can easily stop being a good deal.
- Armslist is similarly screwy, with the added complication of "I knkw what ah got", limited selection, and people that just don't reply to your emails for whatever reason. Hiwever, if you get lucky and find a good deal with a live human behind it, you can often skip the transfer and shipping fees with a bit of driving.
- Check your local gun shops. If they've got nothing but RAS47s and C39s? Walk away (walk away walk away). If it's a smaller gun shop that has good stuff, see if they can cut you a deal if it's over market price. However, if they're an LGS that appears to deal in some volume, they may have exactly the AK you're looking for, the trick is finding these sorts of places.
Don't be afraid to buy one that's been Tapco'ed,. Furniture for AKs is easy to find online.
Good luck on the hunt!
Oh, and MAK 90s and SARs are also good guns if you can find them.

What are you fucking retarded? "An unusually good rifle"? He bought one from the website like everyone else, if they just randomly send out good ones I have just as good of a chance as he does to get a "good one"

I have an O-PAP and it works great. One of the more accurate AK's I have ever shot and the build quality is decent. If you can find one for a decent price I would highly recommend. Only complaints are that its a bit ugly and a bit heavy.
