9mm will kill a nog, 10mm will kill an engine block
9mm will save you in the hood, 10mm will save you in the woods
9mm can kill a man across the street, 10mm can kill a man across two football fields
Good 9mm can tear through heavy winter clothing, good 10mm can blow through level 3a body armor, an eighth of an Inch of steel, bulletproof glass, or a cadillac
.50 AE is a great caliber in the wrong platform, A .50 AE Vector would be metaphysical perfection in SMG form.

.454 Casull is a beautiful gift from handgun heaven and I hope one day it becomes as popular as .44 mag so ammo prices go down and somebody makes a decent light bullet load. My dream is a Deagle conversion for it, but I might have to spend $5k+ on making that a custom job.
>SMG with the FPE of 7.62x39 but with a small enough cartridge to fit in a tiny package and still have a good barrel length >fuck your 5.7x28 we pierce armor with BRUTE FUCKING FORCE >SWAT teams start coming armed with Deagle Brand Deagles as backup weapons >all those police trade-ins
Closed the gap between .308 and .30-06 in a short action. Nobody gave a shit until Hornady noticed Remington was doing nothing with .260 except shoving them up their butts. Now we have 6.5 and 6.0 Creedmoor, and I'd love to see if a 7.0 Creedmoor could match a .280 Remington and chunk a 160gr .284 bullet at 2800fps but out of 24" short actions/autoloaders.
Angel Morgan
30-06 is the single most versatile hunting cartridge ever made. fite me.
Gabriel Fisher
.357 mag is THE "do it all" cartridge. It's taken every game animal in NA, is a staple anywhere that sells ammo, has a ton of loadings with a variety of performance and effects, has tons of gun options ranging from carry snubbies to Big Irons to lever rifles, is powerful enough to one shot stop a man but not bust a wrist. I could go on and on.
Lawful good: 7mm Remington magnum True nuetral: .25-06, but only outside of grizzly country Lawful Evil: 12 gauge
Isaac Garcia
.30-06 Springfield. Just the pure versatility of this round makes it my favourite. From antelope in Arizona to moose in Alaska, this one can do pretty much everything you need to if you can shoot halfway straight. You can get ammo everywhere and there are tons of rifles chambered for it. Not to mention it being an absolute classic.
.44 Magnum is a close second just because of how fun it is to shoot.
A Garand with ap ammo is way deadlier than an ar15, it can stop cars, apcs, and modern soldiers who wear body armor
Civvy ars with all copper / lead 5.56 ammo is only useful for hunting small game and is useless against soldiers outside of headshots
M855 is not ap

A .40 caliber barrel helps with that though.
Christopher Scott
True 10mm loads. I'm using 200gr hardcast in this baby for trail sidearm.
The real underdog, though, is .41 magnum. That's a round that needs more light.
Elmer Keith may have given up on .45 long, but Dick Casull was our savior.

Alright. My favorite caliber is 12 gauge. I fucking love 12 gauge.
Want to play sports? Birdshot. Want to hunt birds? Birdshot. Want to defend your home? Buckshot. Want to hunt large game? Slugs. Want to blast away at various targets and watch them all explode while you smile behind the recoil and blast? Any 12 gauge will do you right.
God I just fucking LOVE 12 gauge. The sound of loading shells is satisfying and the sound of an empty hull hitting the ground is music.

Not him, but I don't trust fast hollowpoints by default, so I'd rather have 65gr XDs at 2300 (357sig out of the same 6" barrel length). Though I might well change my mind if I did some research on the Liberty rounds; it is 18% more energy, so it would be an upgrade assuming those bullets do work well at those speeds, and have tolerable barrier performance.
And you only need a 9" .357sig barrel to match that energy (65gr@2494 -- 8% heavier, 4% slower) -- while the gun is 3" longer, with the lighter G22/31 or G35 slide instead of a G40 slide it should be a bit lighter. And I don't really see a use case where a 6" barrel is totally practical, but 9" is just too much -- I wouldn't go as far as to say the miniscule weight saving makes a 9" .357sig is better, but I'd say they're pretty much equal.
Shitty underpowered meme from pistols, it's good in carbines but ammo supply is shit. Impractical, it's a mildly delayed blowback. >FBI successfully meme'd "expansion doesn't matter" into existence Citation needed >adequately penetrating 2000fps+ loads that BTFO 3a body armor without crazy over penetration are available You mean the underpenetrating Civil Defense load, or the massively overpenetrating Xtreme penetrator?
Ryder Cook
>Shitty underpowered meme from pistols, it's good in carbines but ammo supply is shit. sounds like 5.7
William Wright
.45-70 is objectively the single best rifle caliber for anyone who isn't using their rifle as part of a regular force in a military conflict.
>500gr subsonic loads that'll kill a man through level III plate without a sound >405g supersonic loads that are accurate out to 1100yds with correct holdover >works well in lever gats, bolt actions, or rebarreled .410 semiautos >catastrophic damage due to extreme energy at almost any range
William Barnes
7.62 mauser is the original meme vestpuncher cartridge. I'm sure good loads still go through soft vests .357 magnum is the optimal revolver cartridge for defense against anything less than a bear, it doesn't require insane hand strength or using pussy loads like .44 magnum, and it's not a fudd bullet like .38 special
Owen Collins
No, he obviously meant the Xtreme Defender. It's basically a version of the Xtreme Penetrator redesigned to not massively overpenetrate, and the 65gr version in .357sig is really something.
Michael Parker
>can't carry a lot of it >strong recoil >ballistics of 7.62x39 with a freight train tied to the tail pass

You do realize that real life is not like video games right? If a soldier gets shot in the leg or arm he goes from being an asset to a liability unless he's hopped up on drugs or a pure badass undergoing a massive adrenaline dump. Now don't get me wrong I prefer .308 in most of my semi-automatic rifles but it's silly to say that a 5.56 is useless against a human. Plus people generally tend to do this thing where they attempt take cover when they're being shot at, doesn't matter if it's a .22 or a .50 BMG.
Brody Evans

>redesigned to not massively overpenetrate Just saw a bare gel test with 21.5" penetration with the 9mm version, their site claims only 15" penetration. With the Sig they claim 17.5" penetration so I assume it goes even further.

With JHPs, .22 TCM expands to a larger diameter than a 9mm FMJ.

Lincoln Perez
Alright, since you love to talk on shit you don't know about:
>useless on soldiers
I'm guessing you're saying this because of body armor? Our plates are rated for 30-06, our helmets don't stop direct hits very well, and in the event that anybody other than turret gunners wear their gay ass shoulder and dick pads, those don't stop rifle rounds. A 5.56 is perfectly capable of making pelvic shots, a generous target and highly fatal, as well as anything from the boots to the dick and the edges of our plates outward because here's a shocker: the soft armor padding in our vests is only rated for 9mm +P+.
Sorry that you're a fucking idiot.
Also:
>inb4 muh too small of a target in a firefight
If you're getting into an honest firefight with any military force with half-assed training and armaments, you're not going to fare well. For hit-and-run tactics, any intermediate or full-power rifle cartridge is going to have similar effects because you should be shooting one or two targets, stowing your weapon, and booking it to a safe spot to stash your shit and go pretend to do other shit before they can get aerial assets to pinpoint you or turn your FFP into little rocks with hundreds of rounds of 7.62x51, .50 BMG and 40mm.
Owen Cooper
This If the average man cant afford it, your niche little caliber is worthless
William Morgan
About as good as 10mm. The only documented failure of it was a shooting in which no good hits were landed.

7x57 Mauser is flat shooting, mild in recoil, and powerful enough to reliably kill anything you'd need to.
Casull's first name was Dick? Goddamn... He should have called the caliber .454 Magnum Dick.

I just started looking into reloading and a 12 gauge pump seems like a beginner reloaders heaven. Don't have to be picky about charges, no need for brass trimming and deburring. It's the perfect way to start. I wish I could use my 12ga more but the local range is anal, so I gotta drive an hour to do it.
Henry Phillips
I've been thinking of this lately for shtf purposes. 12ga is unmatched for versatility. Been considering low brass then paper or cardstock shell and wadding. Super easy to do, the brass doesn't get dinged too much, and no need for lube or worry about casting errors. Making hard cast slugs would be so cool.
Angel Murphy
Oh it totally is the reloader's dream. It's so fucking cool how much you can tamper with loadings (within reason) as well as load literally whatever the hell you want to try shooting that day. There's so many different pellet sizes and materials and you can use so many different kinds of wads and shells as well as heights of brass. Plus, shotguns are really low pressure so there's little chance of kabooming your face. You can reload the same shell probably 4 or 5 times before you start to see instability of the plastic hull and fuck it hulls are cheap. Way cheaper than brass.
Shotgun shell reloading is the tits.

Other caliber thread died, where to collect more calibers in a state that bans online ammo sales?
Thank you, just sucks I can't expand without having to find something. If I want to buy online I have to send it to an FFL. Even if the fee is $5 just doesn't seem worth the hassle for what would be a small box or a single round. Ranges and gun shows are all I have

Considering that the FBI standard strongly prefers penetration from 12" to 18" in all tests, 21.5" in bare gel (and similar in the various barrier tests) certainly doesn't seem like "massive overpenetration"; I'd consider it mild overpenetration. Especially if you compare it the overpenetration typical expanding bullets tend to experience in barrier tests.
Not sure what test you saw, or even what ammo, as Underwood rates both their 9mm standard-pressure XD loads (65gr and 90gr) at the 15" of penetration you mention. But 21.5" seems a little surprising, are you sure they weren't testing the +P+ version or something?
When you said 21.5", I thought of this MAC video where he tests the 90gr +P+ and 90gr +P, both of which Underwood rates at 16". Actual penetration in bare gel is 21.5" for +P+ (but this is apparently inaccurate due to gel temperature) and 17.75" for the +P. Then with a 16" barrel (measured at 1777fps, whereas 90gr .357sig is rated at 1700fps) the +P+ penetrates 20.5" (starting 24:22"). youtube.com/watch?v=ClJcJ8LQFbQ
Also see this MAC video testing the 90gr 9mm +P, among other rounds, against various barriers. (90gr +P+ gets thrown in at the end, shooting at gel through IIa body armor.) The 90gr +P consistently gets 19-22" of penetration in gel, regardless which barrier he puts in front. youtube.com/watch?v=0piGeTVMZWs Now these are not FBI-spec tests; for one thing, he's using single layers of steel and sheetrock, instead of double layers, and for another the gel is too warm. But they still say something about performance, and the XD's consistency in performance is really remarkable. (Also check the hole at 21:09 and bullet at 32:06 -- not that it has any significance, but it's adorable.)
I can certainly live with 19-22" of penetration instead of FBI's 12-18" ideal, especially if the choice is between 19" bare/22" sheetmetal, vs. 12-18" bare/28+" sheetmetal.
Oliver Jackson
My whole post is correct because you should be Chechen-mode. If you're being shot at by a team-sized or larger element and you're not doing a fucking turn-and-burn, you're fucked. The Chechen snipers terrified Russian soldiers, sometimes with as low a caliber as .22LR.
You shoot and scoot or you die. Pick a vulnerable target of opportunity, fire, elect a second target if conditions allow, then GTFO.
There's a reason trained OPFOR for exercises do a lot of shoot-and-scoot. Being nickel-and-dimed by an enemy you'd have to chase, find and then kill is a lot harder than some dumbass hanging around for his eventual A-10 visit.
Joshua Stewart
>compensating for a tiny dick by weilding a big bore gun lmao
Jose Barnes
This. In my extensive FPS vidya experience, I take a shot or two from a concealed position and then fucking hightail it out of there before I'm met by either explosives or a hail of MG suppressing fire. Then I pop up 50 yards away and do it again. It works until I run out of ammo or am spotted moving. It must work in real life too.
I love 40sw and think its great for a home defense cartridge and duty round. I understand that lol 9mm is soupier this point but I still enjoy 40 and its benefits.
