I'm new to this, so don't bully pls. Here's my situation.
My grandfather is wanting me to sell my current Westernfield 550 shotgun to get a Remington 870 Super Magnum so I can use 3-1/2" shells to hunt (Yes, I can use 3" and be fine, but he ain't having it).
Now, I was already planning on buying an old Remington 870 Police Magnum, because they're cool, and not the pieces of shit that he wants me to buy now that Remington keeps pumping out.
So my question is, is it possible for me to buy a Police Magnum, and then buy a Super Magnum receiver to put on it, so I can have the best of both worlds, or is it just a pipe dream?
I can't find much help from anyone, so this is my last resort. Any help would be appreciated.
Bud, police magnums are set to take 3" shells. Both the barrels and the receivers; you realize that you'd just be replacing the whole shotgun to get what you want right?
Jason Williams
Just wait 2 years for your grandpa to go senile, buy whatever gun you want and tell him it's a Remington
Aaron Gutierrez
So wait, are you asking if 3" and 3.5" chambered barrels/receivers interchange between each other?
Or are you asking about cannibalizing an older [better quality] 870 for parts to put on a newer 3.5" Remington?
If the latter, don't bother. The problems stem from receiver rust (poor finish) and flimsy ejectors. It's a lot of work to end up with mostly the same problems. Why not get a Benelli Supernova?
Nicholas Sanchez
Didn't realize that. If that's what it takes, I guess it ain't worth it. Especially on an older and better quality Remington.
Austin Peterson
Yeah, by the time you're done you'd have replaced everything that's desirable about the police magnum line except the aluminum trigger housing (which is quite frankly nothing special). Why is he so set on you using 3 1/2?
Easton Roberts
I guess that makes sense. In the end, I guess I'll just get the basic Police Magnum, or at least a nice Wingmaster. Nothing against Benelli, but I like wood and metal. It has a more traditional feel, and I'm old-school like that.
Lucas Flores
He's been hunting his whole life (he's kind of a fudd, but pretty open-minded at times), and says the only shotgun you should ever need would be a gun that can fire all size shells. He said to get either a Winchester or a Remington. I try to convince him that 3" works just fine, but he says it should be able to use them all.
Nicholas Ramirez
>wanting me to sell >so I can use 3-1/2" shells to hunt SHOTGUN IS FINE
Josiah Ross
Yeah. I don't see a point in the 3-1/2" shells anymore. The 3" are just fine for any other job, and now, the 3-1/2" is just pushing it.
Ryan Foster
Good call. Stick with the classic pre-cerberus 870.
Brayden Clark
Thanks. I like the older designs anyway.
David Watson
I have a westernfield 550 with an 18 inch barrel and I hunt deer with it. It shits all over rustingtons any day of the week don’t you dare sell it.
James Ross
I see your point. My 550 has barely caused any issues with me, but I would rather just get an old 870 for aesthetic. I might just keep them both, though.
Jace Stewart
Fair enough, I can kind of understand the logic there at least.
I agree with what the other anons have said; if you get an older 870, be it a wingmaster or police magnum, you will not be let down. The only time my magnum skipped abeat was when I bought a box of estate fields loads for cheap skeet practice, had issues with the extractor jumping the case. Went back to federal and never had an issue.
Leo Peterson
I've never even seen 3 1/2 for sale locally, where is he buying them?
Thomas Ortiz
Do that. Never sell a gun. I've done it twice and despite needing it once to pay medical bills I still regret both.
Carter Parker
Just buy a Remington dude
Daniel Clark
They're kinda uncommon, but I can find them in smaller businesses. Worse part is, he doesn't even use them. Come to think of it, I think he only has one gun that fires 12 gauge 3-1/2", and it's in the vault. He also has a Mercury Magnum double-barrel 10 gauge, but I'm pretty sure that's the only size those shells come in. Could be wrong though.
Tyler Davis
I'll keep those in mind. I REALLY want a Police Magnum from the 70's. Or even the 60's/ It sounds silly, but I like the idea of having a relic from the times long gone. Gives me a kind of aesthetic feel.
Evan Baker
get a benelli nova or a mossberg 835
Kayden James
Must remove shoulder to remove honk.
Jonathan Thompson
As much fun as chasing cripple geese around a farm field, 3.5" has a very good use.
Aaron Clark
Yes
Cameron White
If you must have a 3.5 inch chamber maybe look at a benelli supernova or nova? 3.5 inch chambers are unnecessary for almost all applications (even though I insisted on having one because I only wanted one shotgun and I wanted it to be able to shoot literally anything) but It seems like all you have to do is convince your grandfather that you really don't need a 3.5 inch chamber at all
Jordan Robinson
Out of curiosity, what are you hunting that he thinks mandates a 3.5? 3 inch twelve gauge is not exactly an anemic load.
Jaxson Edwards
NO ONE USES 3 1/2 SHELLS. TELL GRAMPS HE'S WRONG.
Jayden Powell
>benelli nova I came to post this. Its the best pump 3.5 mag gun.
Also 3.5 supermags haven't even been common for all that long. Its not like your grandpappy was hunting with them in the 70s
Cooper Kelly
Geese and duck. It's common practice among many old-school hunters to use it.
