Slugs.

338 is also good

Slugs

Slugs. Not even a question.

If carrying a FAL para or a scar17, I’d give the edge to 308. Multiple rounds of 308 assraping a bear.

It would be a bolt action .308

do not use deer slugs

What about offensive use against bears?

benis

>manual
Gonna go with slugs. pump gun is faster than a bolt action too.
>semi-auto
.380 should have adequate penetration with lower recoil allowing for more accurate rounds on target in a short period of time. Either one would be a good choice really, but the .308 rifle would perhaps be a more utilitarian defensive weapon at least for meme situations that never really happen like vatican ninja-sniper-assassin deathsquads attacking you from 300m.

Hard slugs,
That said leave the bears alone, they are pussies, hike/be outside smart

Meant to add hard like brenneke but needing a bear gun is mostly wrong, bear spray is better but carry both.
>inb4 you dont even live in a griz area and are asking this

Go back.

>bear spray is better
Oh you're b8ing okay

The most exhaustive studies done have shown bear spray is better.
It has a lower skill level to use so is more effectively used.
When using a gun only the only thing researchers noticed was that the bears were injured and died more often. Rate of injury and death to the person was unchanged.

You're going to get BTFO within the hour. On the rare chance you're not b8ing again go back.

>hurrr I dont understand statistics so that means your from r*ddit
All studies show bear spray is less likely to result in serious injury to yourself.

I live damn near on the largest population of grizzlies in CONUS, everyone here carries bear spray and a gun, or just bear spray. No one gives a shit when retards show up out here and gets attacked when they aren't carrying spray.

>i dont have an argument so leave!
Stay out of bear country user.

idiots think this is bait. Obviously live outside bear country.

Go back

A meta-study done on a few hundred encounters ruled in favor of bear spray (2012)
One done on a thousand ruled in favor of firearms (19990

It's possible that firearms proficiency has gone down since the first study, or the bears have evolved to be bulletproof. Or people have recently decided to carry fuddy-fives and 9/10 mememeters in bear country instead of 44 magnum as a bare minimum and a semi automatic rifle in .308/pump or semi automatic shotgun loaded with slugs or better being preferred. One of the reasons you should never hunt with a fuddy bolt or lever action or with an underpowered "good enough for deer" caliber is that when carrying a rifle, you will most likely have your hands tied and be unable to deploy bear spray fast enough. So you use lead spray. A semi automatic long gun in a large caliber with at least 10 rounds of ammo is essential. Use the bear spray or handgun if your rifle is set down and you're gutting something.

>.t bear
Nice try honey nigger but im not falling for it

the secret is that the name is ironic

Have you read any of the studies?
> We found no significant difference in success rates (i.e., success being when the bear was stopped in its aggressive behavior) associated with longguns (76%) and handguns (84%). Moreover, firearm bearers suffered the same injury rates in close encounters with bears whether they used their firearms or not... Firearm variables (e.g., type of gun, number of shots) were not useful in predicting outcomes in bear–firearms incidents.

Stopping power is a massive myth unless you're using something like a 4-bore, and who but millionaires acutally does that. Sure the bear will die, but you still have 900 lbs of meat crashing at you.

I have. I came to the conclusion that there was no control and sample sizes were so small you might as well use anecdotes. The best you can do is not fuck yourself over and prioritize based on power and draw speed.

A large caliber rifle or shotgun with a high rate of fire is #1 and already in your hands if you do have it. You don't carry it just for bear. Do not carry it in a sling or it's useless due to the shouldering delay.
Bear spray has a higher hit rate than anything and more reliably deters bears than handguns
A handgun is a fucking joke but if you have to use it, make sure it's less of a joke than a glock 19. A glock 20 magdump takes a few minutes to kill a bear.
A small caliber gun or one with a low rate of fire is the absolute worst thing to have. This includes basically every handgun except for a .44 automag or a deagle.

Slugs.

The question is will you have the time to lay down fire? Usually not. If you have that kind of distance on it you can just turn 360 degrees and moonwalk away.

No, you're the one who doesn't undersatdn statistics. For instance, people with guns in their home are more likely to injure themselves than fend off an intruder. Does this mean guns are dangerous and subpat for fending off home invaders? Of course not. Filter our statistic population to those who are capable of handling firearms responsibly and you will see basically no self harm. Likewise if you were to filter out idiot hikers with insufficient handguns you'd find guns are perfectly fine for making bears fuck off. This is why you have to answer questions when applying for insurance, so they know which populations' statistics will be useful in predicting your personal outcome. Just as statistics showing few people die on the job are not useful for selling life insurance to roofers, statistics showing bear spray is more effective than a firearm is not useful for advising people who can aim for shit and won't use a .38 special pussy protector against a goddamn grizzly.

3in black magic slugs without question

Lol faggot. Bears rarely need to be shot but when they do I’ll be shooting not spraying fuckin liberal faggot.

ammoland.com/2018/02/defense-against-bears-with-pistols-97-success-rate-37-incidents-by-caliber/#axzz5UiFOD26U
Here's this thingy. If pistols work then I don't see why a huge ass slug or a 308 would not. The Hornady slugs are just their 45-70 rounds packed into a shell, use those. There's a difference between defense and hunting that people are not making. I'm assuming we're not discussing black bears and other fuzzy cowards that run away when you sneeze.

Yea a 9x19 is not ideal for all people against a bear but 9mm fmj penetrates and a Glock 19 holds 15 of them stock. Even if a bear was charging me I would feel cool with a Glock and one mag. You can move you can shoot it super close too. Maybe as an encumbered as shit obese fag or an knee replacement boomer I would have to rely on massive revolvers. Let’s see the bear keep up with me when every time it gets within 10 feet it gets 3 loud bangs in its face and a guaranteed hit. Obviously shot placement is huge here and you would have to be shooting for that upper torso area. Change my opinion Glock haters and people who unironcially shill for bear spray over a gun.

Your assuming the average Jow Forums retard is proficient with firearms and interacting with bears.
Your assuming they understand a bluff charge and a real one, can identify a grizzly vs black bear, shit show most people out here (within an hour of yellowstone) a cinnimon phase black bear and they'll call it a griz.
Even Jow Forums would accurately be represented by the statistics that show the average retard is better with bear spray. Pay attention to all of the ND threads and go to a meet up and check out the groups.

>glock haters
You, go innawoods in Alaska
Clean up the gene pool.

>just use bear spray, bro

Attached: 1540376533106.jpg (756x324, 53K)

I have my dude twice and everyone I met out there in AK had there big 44s but I would trust my life to a Glock 19. I would actually take my 31 rounder with me and call it a day with reloaded fmj from the range. Shit would not be able to sneak up on me like a geriatric hunter and I’m not gonna miss my shots even when it’s cold and the adrenaline is going. I’m not a fag and if anything I would feel less comfortable with the big iron due to the recoil fucking my shot placement up.

Ummm, I *think* people on Jow Forums have seen Golden Kamuy and can identify big bears, thanks.

D-don't calibershame me, I have weak wrists, I'M TRIGGEREDDDD

I’m not a manlet I just never have shot a .44
lol why bud. I’m being serious. This is the place that taught me what ever weapon you are most comfortable with is the best weapon for you. For me a Glock 19 would be the best and I tried to give my argument for why I would find it totally acceptable and useable. If anything you’re the one acting like a fag implying my arguments aren’t valid or assuming I’m trolling.

That applies for self defense against other humans. Bears don't think the way you think they do. It feels pain, it tries to kill the pain. A 9mm will just massively annoy it.

>The question is will you have the time to lay down fire? Usually not. If you have that kind of distance on it you can just turn 360 degrees and moonwalk away.
Implying magdumping 25rds takes more than a few seconds

>80%
Was honestly not expecting to do that well, but passed.

I have no idea what the defining characteristics of different types of bears are; I guessed on every one and got the same score.

Attached: bearIDtest.png (587x158, 9K)

All these assmad bears in this thread kek

Dish face, hump, claws, eating a person and round ears.
Had to take it so I could hunt bears here.

>bluff charge and a real one
>grizzly vs black bear
Who gives a shit? Do you see a bear? Shoot the bear until movement ceases. Maybe it was bluffing, maybe it wasn't. Now it's dead. Problem solved.

>it was just a prank bro! You didn't have to shoot the bear!
>he dindonuffin!

I'm actually pretty proud of myself for this.

The bear will be on your ass before it stops moving.

.22 short for bears.

And when they find the body of the bear and arrest you for poaching, take your drivers license, hunting license, gun and vehicle?

Oh right, I forgot they were immortal and some only pretend to die when shot to trick us.

They won't because you can just report it and say "I was attacked by a goddamn bear."

No, if stopping power is a myth in people, that goes doubly so for bears. A bear will be too hopped up on fight or flight adrenaline and will shrug it off until they bleed out minutes later, by which point your ass is already dead.

This is you.
youtu.be/B3qhEIZBlX8

But did she die?

Attached: 1540986256619.jpg (125x109, 3K)

Oh so you have no clue how it works, gotcha. They thoroughly investigate it like a goddamn murder scene esp for a griz not as much for black bears and don't accept uhh it was near me which means it was attacking!
That's how you go to jail.
They leave decent footprints and you can tell the difference between a walk and a run.

Hi satan

>.380 should have adequate penetration

Only if you hit them in the neck

This is bait

Bears are bros and you shouldn't be trying to hurt them. Woman will hate you if you do and the ecosystem will go to fuck. Just shout hello Mr bear every so often so you don't spook one

Attached: Black_bear_large.jpg (1869x2720, 544K)

leave the fucking bears alone you fucking nigger stay away from our turf

i mean their turf

Yeah they want about as much to do with us as we do with them, usually only attacking if startled or starving. Also avoid spending too much time near streams.

Bear shill detected.

Attached: 1541224670904.jpg (427x427, 21K)

Lmao @ ppl who think bears have health bars and will just harmlessly ragdoll once you've put precisely 10 9mm rounds into them.

Attached: 1541218978023.jpg (453x604, 73K)

Nobody cares you lying communist faggot. People shoot bears every day.

If Les Stroud doesn't carry for bears, you don't need to. Knowledge will serve you much better than a firearm

Attached: 1538954721123.webm (720x480, 2.63M)

id rather a high caliber handgun for close range bear simply because spray wont always save you from a half injured bear who doesnt give a fuck if it can hear or smell. yes its best to avoid them and leave them alive but this thread is about which caliber to use you fucking pleb

So you're telling me you can have good shot placement with a long rifle while a bear is charging you. Bullshit. There's a difference between hunting a bear and defending yourself from one, though I will concede a large caliber revolver would be the most effective, but I'd rather use bear spray and not have to worry about aiming at all, and still have 99% efficacy.

T. Never been in bear country.
