Mountain states are some of the largest and least populated states due to the westward expansion period mostly skipping over them and heading to the pacific coast states instead, especially during the gold rush period in CA. Recent exception is AZ which is now more populated but still has a very low population density (33rd most densely populated in US and this is the most densely populated of the 8 mountain states, 60 ppl per sq mile). Alaska is another super huge state with extremely low population for similar reasons, mass population migration skipped it. AK, WY, and MT have less than 10 people per sq mile.
