Why are Valmets so great compared to AKs then if it's just a copy?
The actual answer is that the Finns and (((Israelis))) understood the core concepts of marksmanship, reliability, and conscript intelligence levels. The Indian top brass doesn't understand some if not all of those and as such, hired people with similar knowledge to build a gun that took none of those concepts into consideration.

The problem with the INSAS is that poos in the loo barely understand the concept of metalurgy. Asking them to build some kind of AK is like asking the average person to build a spaceship.

Because the Indian government is comically corrupt, every fucking square inch of it.
Endemic to Indian culture, any time the government does something, people will want to make sure to get themselves or their family special deals and special contracts, further, when it comes to actual production, the people running the factory will fleece that shit within an inch of its life.
They will do it, THE absolute cheapest way possible, in spite of specifications, to make something which vaguely looks like it could fit specs, if you were nearsighted and took off your glasses. Nevermind actually being able to fill the spec, it just has to KINDA look the part.
The savings from this gets pocketed, and the parts and final assembly suffers thusly.
There is no way to get around this problem any time in the future, you cannot make the Indians not do this, their only chance to a good quality rifle is to either outsource it or outright buy foreign arms. Russia offers to sell them AK100 series rifles, but India denies it due to their obscene national pride.

Far more importantly, they understand the concept of actually making parts and products to ordered specifications, and aren't generally so scummy as to steal the money they've been paid to make their ordered products.
You will never ever see a Valmet, Sako, or Galil, which looks like an INSAS.
