This biggest issue was why didn't the DND fucking keep its development a secret in its own Area 51 under lockdown instead of announcing to the world what we're building and what its capabilities are. There's no doubt that after the US fucked F-111 and cbf building large interceptors for 20 years since Vietnam and carriers some other western country should have stepped in and built something good. Also could have been the TSR and a real successor to Canberra. Right aircraft at the right time. Shame. Really this is a story about the degeneration of western postwar industrial aerospace expertise and capacity.

An interceptor or multi-role supersonic plane make much more flexible platforms for anti-ballistic weapons than fixed ground to air missiles. Particularly when you have to defend a very large area.
