All the large cities have high unemployment/underemployment, high gang violence, high homelessness and require outside resources to continue existance. LA is a major feat in urban development in the desert, but without those aqueducts the entire city would literally dry up.

I'd imagine the "decider" for if Cali turned into chaos or outright capitulated immediately would be how much of the naval stations there side with the "red" side of things. That would tip things from "horrible but potentially managable" to "utterly fucked" if a few destroyers decided to sit outside of the harbors and toss tomahawks into the "blue" HQs and shutting down the only other supply route into coastal CA, because the eastern inland regions are all but guaranteed to be aligned heavily with "red"

The way I see it, the road to civil wars (and perhaps wars in general) is a long process of decline in political discourse and society itself to the point where even something insignificant gets blown out of proportion and becomes the excuse everyone's been looking for. Remember, the Nullification Crisis did not start the US Civil War despite how big it was, but the Attack on Harpers Ferry 27 years later effectively did, even though it was a raid of virtually no strategic consequence. Things hadn't deteriorated badly enough in 1832 to get the ball rolling, but by 1859, they had.

Every mass shooting, every riot, every twitter spate, every person who shrieks "FUCK WHYTE PIPO" or "FUCK NIGGERS" in public, every Confederate statue getting torn down, every scandal (real or fake), every youtuber who gets banned for wrongthink... It all contributes to the erosion of social trust, bit by bit. Yes, each one of these things is insignificant, but cumulatively their effect is devastating.

You're getting a lot of people who are "checking out" of society because they can no longer take it, but you're also getting an increasing number of people (both the vocal and the quiet) who see everyone who thinks differently of them not only as the enemy, but a deadly enemy, a plague upon society that has to be exterminated.
