What does Jow Forums think of Smith and Wesson's M&P Shield?

I'm thinking of getting one as my first handfun.

Reliable 9mm conceal carry gun. Would not recommend for first gun because of smaller mass.

Get a full sized pistol like an M&P 2 or Glock 19/17.

Best thing is to rent the Shield then a full size and see which you like better.

Can they handle +p rounds? If so I might get one.

I believe they can

Great little pistol. My dad has 3 (different locations) after buying his first one. For a while LGS's couldn't keep the 9mm version on the shelf they sold so fast.

My dad has one for CC.
My roommate just bought one for CC.
They’re both under 5’9 and have medium sized hands at best.
I went into a gun shop and handled a few medium to compact sized pistols including the shield in both 9 and 40.
I’m 6’2 with large hands, and the shield, even with the grip extension on the mags isn’t big enough to be comfortable.
Besides the size it’s not a bad handgun, great for cc if it feels good in your hands.
I came out of the gun shop set on a G19, sadly I’ve gotta wait 2 months til I turn 21, as finding one from a private seller willing/able to meet at a gun show (Oregon) has been a struggle.
Any Oregon Kommandos willing to help me out?

I'm sure it's fine, but I'm glad I got something a little larger for my first. If you are planning to concerned carry and don't anticipate having money for two guns in the near future you'll probably be fine with it. I didn't go with Smith and Wesson because I don't want to support a company that makes things in a state where you can't own them, but that's not enough of a reason to tell you not to buy it.

I bought a 9mm shield for my first handgun with the idea of CC.
I liked it and was very lightweight but ended up getting a 9C as well for that each daka and a better grip since it is just a bit wider and I carry that daily now with no issue. You can also use the full sized mags in the compact line.

Great subcompact CC piece, lightweight, the M2.0 has a much better trigger than the original model. Subcompacts do not make a good first handgun. Handguns are hard to master and the small grip profile, shorter barrel and lighter weight will make recoil difficult to control, expecially from those not used to it. Buy a 22lr or fullsize 9mm to learn and practice fundamentals on first.

I had one and loved it. Felt great in the hands, easy to conceal and comfortable to carry. But I have larger than average hands and I was horrible in the accuracy department with it. Hand me a full size or regular compact, on target every time.

I got the 2.0 compact with the 4 inch barrel. Love it, easy to conceal.

You're not asking for a straw purchase, are you?

Hit up Armslist, hand over your $500, enjoy new G19

Honestly I don't really like SW semi-autos. The biggest problem on these is the long grip but that is one of the selling points. They also have an odd hinged trigger. I carry a double stack with a shorter grip.

absolutely! you won't regret it.

I have the 2.0 9mm
It's a good gun and fits my 5'11 manlet hands alright
It's ergonomics definitely help with the size
Also get an apex trigger/spring kit ASAP if you live in a cuck like MA. The default 10lb trigger pull and hinge trigger is ass here

It was my first. Absolutely love how it fits in my tiny hands. I've had 0 problems with it.

Is the safety any better on the 2.0 and 1.0? I remember I tried one in store and it took Thor's might to flip.
I wish they used the normal M&P safety.

Mine was like that for a while. Breaking it in didn't help either, but the issue went away after I took that whole rear sear assembly out and cleaned/lubed everything.

If I want to make a .40sw shield into a .357sig shield would I just need a new barrel or would a new recoil spring be needed as well to handled the higher pressures?

Ok Mitch.
The shield is g2g. I'm 6'3" with large hands and had to put a pinkie extension on the flush mag, but its been a great fun. I carry it appendix to work every day, it truly does disappear while being big enough to shoot comfortably. If I were to just have one i think I'd go for the m&p9c. Only a little bit bigger and wider but holds more. Trigger isnt as bad as some people say.
Ive shot buffalo bore +p out of it pretty often with 0 problems.

Love them.

Yes, they can. Lower power +p+ as well, like 9BPLE, but it's obviously not recommended. But you won't blow yourself up with it.

I'm a manlet, and I can get my pinky on the flush fit mag, but a pinky buttplate, or even the extended mag for carry, are recommended. They're super easy to conceal with pretty much all clothing (I can hide it with a t-shirt and basketball shorts), and the trigger, although hinged, feels better than the big brother.

Ive got one in .45. Love it. Hated the hinged trigger but an Apex fixed that. Its the perfect cc for me. Dont even argue fags i said for me

Oregon has mandatory background checks.
Since I’m only 20 I can only buy from a private seller. The Oregon law on private sales now is only through a FFL, or you can do it at a gun show.
I can’t go through a FFL because they can’t legally transfer a pistol to me.
I have to find somebody willing to sell, who is also willing/able to go to that gun show and do it there. Gun shows only occur once every couple of months in each area. So I’ve gotta base it on who’s available to go to said gun shows. So far out of 4 different sellers they haven’t been able to go to said gun shows.
>I’ve got a fucking security clearance from the army but I still can’t buy a handgun

All of their M&P's are like that, stiff controls.

I can help you out. Just come by our shop at 1201 NE Lloyd Blvd #700, Portland, OR 97232

What? You couldn't find any more credible place to look for an opinion on one of the most popular carry guns for the past six years?

What do I think about the M&P Shield? It's cheap, it's reliable, it's light, it's thin, it's a fantastic carry gun. Is your confirmation bias satisfied?

A thread died for this, go to hgg

I love mine, recently got a rail for it because I keep it in my nightstand when not carrying it and I want a flashlight for it.

I was not thrilled when that bullshit passed. That said, nobody I know follows it. Also, if you're in, ask around your unit, somebody will know somebody who will hook you up guaranteed.

Hurr

I'm very happy with mine I definitely recommend it

I carry my Shield most often. Its light and conceals well. I use the Hyve-Technolgies +2 base plates on mine as well.
