1100’s are gas piston operated. I think there’s supposed to be an O ring and some kind of tapered barrel ring but it looks like bubba replaced it with some sort of spring system that I can’t take off

This gun fires but the bolt will not lock back on the last round and it fails to eject.

Overall it’s actually a pretty nice piece. The sights aren’t canted no signs of rust and the trigger is crisp. I bought it for $250 is there any hope of resorting this thing?

That button on the receiver just under the ejection port. Presumably the bolt release. That means it's not an 1100.

I bought it off of a Korean War marine vet. He’s dead now of old age but probably had dementia. The gun is a nice shooter when it works and I have no idea how that massive chunk got taken out. Is there any way to restore this or should I say fuck it and buy another shotgun?

assuming the barrel extension is what the issue is, it looks like you can get replacements from Numrich. gunpartscorp.com
might want to get it looked at by a gunsmith first though

Regardless, holy shit your barrel extension is 1000x fucked.
You absolutely need to get a new barrel before shooting it.
Also, your spring system is not how 1100s work - they work via nestled pistons with a captive 0-ring holding everything together. That spring's...different.
Do you not seen in this photo how fucking jagged and crazy looking that barrel extension is? DO NOT FIRE THAT THING. SERIOUSLY.
