what makes you think we would know?

99% of this board would probably die of exhaustion just exerting themselves on a hot day.

An earthquake or flood or massive snowstorm or power outage causes a disruption of the supply chain for a week or more. Economic collapse and mass unemployment. Asteroid or yellowstone.

Hurricane Katrina.

It looks like war.
It looks like poverty.
SHTF happens every single day.
The question is, how long until it happens to you?

The nuclear plants and their waste storage facilities will melt down if they lose power for any significant amount of time. The accumulative effect of 100's of nuclear meltdowns will likely kill off all humans. Nuclear plants have made our society an all or nothing system where collapse means extinction.

Being in a shithole isn't shtf. Shtf is broadly speaking going from a calm comfortable state of living to an dangerous uncomfortable state of living, if you've always lived in wartorn squalor then war and poverty isn't shtf, its just life.

100+ million dead, billions enslaved or impoverished, it hasn't worked as promised in the long run in a single one of the dozens of countries it's been tried in...

...but, "REAL socialism just hasn't been tried yet!"

I think a collapse of currency and subsequently society is pretty Shit Hit The Fan

No they wont you memester, they go into controlled shutdown. The only way that'll go wrong is if something environmental interrupts backup generators, like a tidal wave or seismic event. Provided the ground isnt literally splitting apart, nuclear power is safe af.

No, they won't. Most reactors don't store their spent rods in an upstairs bathtub that requires water pumps to keep them cool. They all have diesel backups to keep their coolant pumps running (Fukushima's got wiped out by the tsunami).

Chernobyl was a typical (that is, horribly designed) product of Soviet design and management, and even then, there was no serious effect beyond the bodies they callously threw into the fire without sufficient protection to ensure that the other reactors at the plant stayed online. Three Mile Island, meanwhile, melted down into a special concrete chamber built specifically for that purpose and required for all reactors in the US, whereupon they sent a robot in, took pictures, and then sealed the whole thing up with a whole bunch more concrete.

And don't get me started on the people who conflate "meltdown" with "explode", as if a proper PWR/LWR could ever go supercritical with

ahahahahahahahaha they were literally killing cows with rocks, theyre arresting colombian cartels for smuggling in meat. also what shithole are you from since you talk like you have experience

Socialism is a small part of Venezuela's problems. Their main problem is the economy relying 90% on oil exports. And the oil can only be refined through their dam which provides something like 70% of the nations power.

Venezuela's shitty situation more has to do with mismanagement and economic retardation.

>Venezuela
>social democracy
Venezuela is socialist in name only. It's a nation that functions more like a communist gov.

And what happens when the diesel generators run out of fuel?

cities were meant to, and should be destroyed

They have enough fuel onsite to keep the pumps running until the reactor can be shut down and the waste heat drops to a level that can't hurt anything.

That's half the point of having the diesel generators.

And on top of that, Chavez used PDVSA as his personal piggy bank, stealing money left and right for his voters and supporters (and skimming billions off the top for himself). Eventually, without the money required to keep finding and drilling new wells, or even adequately maintaining existing equipment, PDVSA output began to fall off a cliff.

Worse, the US is the only country with refineries geared towards the thick, nasty stuff that is only really found in Venezuela (and parts of Siberia). The same country that is almost finished with renovating its refineries to use the ultra-high-quality shale oil, which is cheaper to refine and produces higher-quality products with less waste.

PDVSA is hosed--and socialism has long since ruined every other industry in the country.

Go to a failed communist state in south america

Or try somalia for hard mode. Ask the longest lived guy what he did. You will never hear "i had a bugout bag and the lightest AR15 possible with 5,000 rounds stocked up to shoot all the bandits"

Suck dick (figuratively), stay peaceful, do good business, and know how to eat things other than instant ramen. It's just life with less food, no money, and no laws.

>has to do with mismanagement and economic retardation
Literally all collectivist and government run economies, which is what socialism is

Canada, if they had the slightest bit of a clue, should have been twisting our arm for years over Keystone. They are totally dependent on Alberta's oil sands to balance their budgets going ahead, and the legal/protest delays have allowed domestic shale to ruin their nation's entire future.

Katrina for a localized happening.

Iraq/Syria or Chechyna/Bosnia for large scale happening.

A SHTF in the USA will lead to collapse. We have so many conflicting cultures, beliefs, groups, organizations, etc that the moment the federal government goes under everyone is out for themselves. Expect multiple states to either declare independence or jockey for the position of "legitimate successor government". Cities will see massive exoduses to the country, and the inevitable conflict as rural communities seek to defend resources from urbanites. Militant groups making land/resource grabs.

Mass death in cities/urban areas due to disease, starvation, lack of drinking water, and fighting with rural people because no one realizes just how vulnerable the majorities US cities/urban areas are to even the slightest distribution disruptions.

I work in emergency nanagement in WA and when we were doing some table top planning for state/federal response to THE BIG ONE (10.0+ quake centered near Seattle area) groups panicked because we realized no one accounted for the fact that Seattle and most cities around it only have enough supplies (food, water, medical) for a max of 48 hours without resupply, so we'd see almost immediate fighting over resources unless we had support on the group within the first 24 hours. That actually opened my eyes and we moved to a rural property because even in our small satellite community we'd be fucked.

Basically what another user said, Katrina. But this time there's no US Coast Guard to rescue people, no FEMA to coordinate response, no organizations to bus in supplies. And people fleeing won't be welcomed with open arms and refugees, they'll be seen as a threat to safety and security and treated as such.

>Venezuela's shitty situation more has to do with mismanagement and economic retardation.

AKA Socialism

thats literally what socialism is. thats the argument. that's why people hate socialism and speak out about it.

it's like you fuckers are halfway there but your brains won't fire enough to connect the dots

Depends. If the birds fly, it will be about a 3 day event, lots of fire, smoke, misery. You may or may not have a average day.

If you're prepping for flying birds, balloons gaining altitude, and elephants, just remember that unless you live near:
a) a place that has actual warheads,
b) a place that sends orders to a), OR
c) a place where people live or work that issue orders to a) via b),
you do not need a bomb shelter. A fallout shelter might still be a good idea, if you're within a few hundred miles downwind of a), b), or c), but plastic and duct tape can turn most places into halfway decent fallout shelters (just remember to stay inside for 2 weeks).

The nasty part is actually what happens *after*, especially if one or more of the regional power grids takes irreparable physical damage (quite possible between localized EMP effects and entire local grids being taken violently offline with no warning to the regional grid managers). Without power, most cities and even towns become unlivable, forcing people to fight for scarce resources or flee (in order to fight somewhere else) to survive.

So, other than the duct tape and plastic, prepping in this case would look pretty much identical to prepping for any other sort of grid-down scenario.

>If the birds fly
whats this mean desu

>If you're prepping for flying birds, balloons gaining altitude, and elephants
clue me in to this slang senpai

The kind of bird that can travel halfway around the world in about 30 minutes or so.

I live 2 blocks away from Offutt Airbase in Nebraska user. I plan to be part of the cloud of atoms that will clutter the area for about a week.

Yeah, you're hosed. If you were a few miles away, I'd suggest an actual bomb shelter, but that's within the crater of a groundburst.

This. Except on larger scale.

Race war.

>having to waste all my ammo on city nogs and leftists
ew

The reactors are in cold shutdown by that time. Many power stations do not even need power to maintain cold shutdown, Fukishima was one of them, actually, but the operators shut off the emergency system right before they lost power, and couldn't turn it back on.

doesn't the waste or spent rods require cooling ponds that themselves need energy to pump in water?

>what does shtf actually look like?
No running water or electricity combined with dwindling food reserves and lack of other essential everyday supplies for weeks or even months at a time. Also maybe even threat of violence over remaining resources and supplies, survival of the fittest scenario with no idea when thing may return to normal. Perhaps due to war, perhaps due to major natural disaster, or perhaps both or perhaps even something else like super disease? aliums? Doesn't matter too much what causes it but that's about what I would safely call shtf conditions.

>waste
nah

>rods
these are lowered into the reactor to absorb neutrons
these do some of the cooling down

Yep, but who gives a fuck about the spent rods? If civilization hasn't collapsed you can roll a fire truck by and refill the pool to replace evaporation, if it is collapsed than a few hot pieces of metal inside a warehouse aren't gonna be your biggest concern.

im what i was trying to say is basically
>if it is collapsed than a few hot pieces of metal inside a warehouse aren't gonna be your biggest concern.

only saying because eventually its going to cause fire and irradiated smoke/ash but in my head i'm thinking that happens within days.

This desu, but less hope and more despair.
>have I wasted time prepping?
It’s better to be prepared than to get fucked user.

not gonna happen, if it did no amount t of lone wolf prepping will save you. You'll never fire your weapon in anger

Lived through a major earthquake.
Main issues were water and power, we started getting dirt coming through the faucets.
Luckily it happened in summer, as with the power outages and the quakes destroying a huge percentage of chimneys, meant people might not have been able to heat their houses.
I was working at a supermarket at the time, we were wheeling out and selling a pallet of water bottles every 15 minutes, even with purchase limits.
The rest of our stock disappeared as well, since noone keeps emergency food supplies.
Shortly after one of the bigger aftershocks hit and leveled the distribution center that was storing the truckloads of water and emergency food being brought in from out of town.
Fortunately water tankers showed up and filled vessels people brought along.

While shit was going nuts all over the city liquor stores were looted, and cordoned off shops were broken into during the night.
The police eventually put a lockdown in the CBD, but over the next couple of weeks every building was broken into and looted anyway - in some cases by police themselves.
A lot of people who left the city to escape the quakes and aftershocks had their houses broken into.

No.

Christchurch? Sounds familiar anyway.

Admit to Us and Yourself that this never happened to you.

Yep.

Alright boomerpede go back to r*ddit already.

Lol
I haven't experienced a major one, only four small 4M ones only one of which cut power locally for 4 hours. My grandad on the other hand was awake when both the 1971 San Fernando quake hit and when the 1991 northridge quake hit, both of which were mild honestly. The funny thing was he moved sometime in between the 71 quake and the 91 quake so he ended up near the epicenter of both when they happened. The 71 quake was worse according to him, he woke up early and was sitting in his bed putting pants on when he heard a rumbling noise, a low but distinctive rumbling that he described like a freight train rumbling next to your house but quieter. Then it hit, and he got flung out of his bed and smacked the wall on the other side of the room pretty hard. When the shaking stopped he still went to work like normal and not much was really changed other than it being big news. In the 91 quake a gas line caught fire down his street and a fish tank fell on the ground and cut everyone's feet but that was it. Quakes that happen in the developed world are pretty easy to recover from, even big ones like the ones that regularly hit Japan.

meant the 94 northridge quake ,the 91 quake was another one but was weaker and uneventful

>The police eventually put a lockdown in the CBD, but over the next couple of weeks every building was broken into and looted anyway
Bollocks. I had a warehouse in Peterborough St that was in the red zone. Not broken into, nothing stolen.

2008 is honestly what made me a prepper.

This. Check out My War Gone By, How I Miss It and Love Thy Neighbor: A Story of War. Keep in mind that both were written by reporters who had access to logistics and vacation time.

assuming you did the smart thing and did such preps as
-spend time outdoors
-get in shape
-learn usefull skills like welding and maintenance
-make lots of friends so you can have lots of allies

Scandinavia?

Don't confuse socialism and communism

Scandinavian countries are mixed economies with large welfare states because the US and NATO provide their defense and they, until recently, had very low immigration. Even the prime minister of Norway told Broke ass Burnie he was wrong.
And the primary goal of socialism is to achieve communism.
Socialism is the ideas of Marx put into law.
Communism is "the fading away of the state" once everyone realizes how wonderful socialism is.

What's it like to be this fucking retarded?

>Socialism is the ideas of Marx put into law.
>Communism is "the fading away of the state" once everyone realizes how wonderful socialism is.
Marx said communism comes about when _advanced_industrial_capitalism_ reaches the deep end and the emergence of communism happens as obvious next step.

>a) a place that has actual warheads
Tfw you live a good spit away from one of two drydocks that can take a super carrier, a boomer base, the largest concentration of nuclear weapons in the US, and one of the biggest Army/AMC bases in the US.

I long ago accepted that if war were declared I'm getting covered by the warm embrace of nuclear fire

It's a little bit more complicated. Scandinavian socialism has been about distributing wealth gained by taxation of companies, and we have had a lot of companies. But Norway has also a huge state-owned oil industry. So currently Norway has about a trillion dollars in state savings and a right wing government, while Sweden has about a trillion dollars in state debt and are trying to figure out who will be in charge of the government after the last election gave the socialists 40% of the voters.

He also said the government will come in after "peak capitalism" and fill the gap with his policies.
AKA socialism.
What you said doesn't make me wrong in any way.

In this situation, if the driver carried, would it be legal for him to shoot the guy? I know that you have the right to not retreat from your car, but it looks like only property damage would be the result, especially if there's room for him to drive away.

Conflating communism with socialism again I see. Do you know how fire departments work?
