Very. Mortars come in better angle to hit between buldings.

That is not the advantage. The advantage is the use of a delay fuze which allows you to punch through some roofs and have the round detonate inside the structure.

look up the battle of Grozny

Mortars are a meme from the 1900’s. Given the ubiquity of guided/smart munitions I can’t see why anybody would waste their time with such antiquated toys like a tube that lobs small ineffective grenades. What a joke...

Great for CQC, try not to get too attached to those fingers though

it works if the goal is to level literally everything (as the Russians were fond of in Chechnya)

Go easy, that’s a lifetime ago for him.

Mortars are one of the most devastating weapons ever devised....cities, open fields...a nightmare....doom!

If a mortar team dials in on your position, you may just have enough time left to bend over and kiss your ass goodbye.

depends on the crew and how well they are trained

Are you under the impression that howitzers don't have delay fuzes?

Mortars are for suppressing tank hunter teams so that friendly infantry can flush nearby buildings so that tanks can demolish far ones. Then they shift fire to interdict lanes and crosssections in the rear so that tank hunters trying to withdraw get shredded.

This is basic bitch urban combat.

A 60mm won't stractch a durable building. 81mm will with sustained fire, but building busting through reinforced brick generally takes 120mm. Usually you use 3-4 shots on PD and delay to be sure, but if collateral is a thing 1 GPS/INS on delay will do it.

They have guided mortars, coolio.

Are you under the impression an infantry squad can pull a howitzer around like egyptian slaves?

Hence, why I said "some roofs"

As a guy who's job used to be calling in indirect fire, mortars are as useful as any other indirect fire weapon in urban warfare, with the added benefit of being more mobile, and smaller enough to set up more easily in the confined spaces of an urban environment.

As another user mentioned, the high angle allows for better fire within the confines of streets and less concern about angles of fire, and the effects of fragmentation are multiplied in the tight quarters.

Again, as another user mentioned, smaller mortars are gonna have trouble with structures, especially 60's (which are glorified grenades), but higher caliber mortars will still do work.

They, like any other asset, are combat multipliers, and as long as the people using them are smart about their capabilities and where to use and not use them, they'll be lethal.
