My own personal theory to this is that the Xenomorph heals very quickly, but should it's own blood come into contact with oxygen, it begins to gain its acidic quality. The more internal damage you can cause to the body of a xenomorph, the better chance you have of causing it's own caustic blood to spill onto / into itself, causing an "internal bleeding" of sorts. This is why projectiles like the FMJs the pulse rifles and whatever MG-42 was being used do very little to stop a xenomorph, because the xenomorph can heal that wound fast enough to stop its own blood from harming its internal organs, whereas the scattergat is causing so much internal damage that the wounds can't close fast enough to keep it's freshly oxidized blood from spilling into itself.
My solution? Weapons that can cause as much internal damage as possible are the clear solution. Flamethrowers might rattle it's own instincts, but are obviously not very effective against physically damaging it's physique. A single projectile has very little effect. Many projectiles with a high RoF have a similar effect to the scattergat's shot, pouring into the xenomorph's body faster than it can close the wounds and effectively causing it's own body to kill itself. An ideal weapon would probably be something like the Metalstorm from early 2000s, firing so many projectiles that it's impossible for the Xenomorph to heal the wounds fast enough to survive. Multiple shooters focusing fire on a single xenomorph might cause similar damage. If multiple-projectile weapons such as high-RoF machine guns or shotguns are unavailable, large-caliber handguns with hollow-point ammunition might also have good effect on the target.

Further expanding on this concept: I believe I have a list of specifications that will deliver optimal Xeno-slaying performance:
>Shotguns, with higher RoF the better
>Large caliber machine guns, ideally around the .50 caliber range
>Rocket Launchers with HEAT warheads. Must have HEAT to literally push vital organs out of the Xenomorph and to cook it from the inside. HE / Fragmentation will be useless for anything other than distractions
>Rifle & Intermediate caliber machine guns with high RoF. MG-42/MG3s, M240s, M249s, and other machine guns with similarly high RoFs will be very effective in bringing down a Xenomorph while still maintaining a reasonable logistical capacity
>Automatic Grenade Launchers, might work because of a decent RoF with good potential to land a direct hit and cause the xenomorph to turn into a gore fountain

Flamethrowers just scare them. It triggers their natural fight-or-flight reactions, their exoskeletons are capable of withstanding the heat and don't catch fire. You'd have to hose them down with flaming napalm and cook them to actually kill them. The flamethrower in Alien and the one in Isolation are just burning gasses, and therefore useless.

I'd go with large calibur, high explosive rounds. A bolter would be ideal, if cost isn't much of a problem.
