5.56 AP, and other bullet ideas

With the proliferation of hard plate body armor, even poor as fuck people can get armor that can defeat most 5.56x45mm loadings. Even M855A1 doesn't defeat LvIV plates with a single hit, so what can be done about this?

I've heard that there are some new AP rounds in R&D right now, but there is a another issue, that tungsten carbide being as expensive as it is why don't we use depleted uranium?

My ideal round would have a 60gr round with a hardened steel jacket (to prevent fragmentation) with a Teflon coat to prevent barrel wear and feed ramp wear. The internal construction would be a depleted uranium penetrator that's rearward with a hollow gap between it and the nose. This puts most of the weight rearward, and with a boat tailed construction would increase accuracy, (something the M995 was extremely bad at) also this gap would allow the penetrator to move forward on impact, enabling the round to tumble when striking flesh.

The main caveat of the round is that it must not fragment easily, especially when striking personnel, this is to avoid any accusations of using the depleted uranium as a "toxic" ammunition and is solely there to defeat hard armor. The Army managed to get OTM ammo approved by stating that the open tip was there to increase accuracy, and thus circumvented the Hague Protocol.

Is there any ban or treaty on DU ammunition? And if you're bored, post your own homegrown bullets.

IIRC the DU was loaned/transferred to the USMil from department of energy specifically for munitions, and basically unobtainable by legal means

DU is is a better penetrator than tungsten, it becomes a self sharpening projectile that penetrates better the more it penetrates, with +50 fire damage because powdered uranium from bullets becomes highly pyrophoric. the air force even got close to 4000 fps projectiles with DU IIRC

Going back to .308 standard issue rifles and using steel tip ammunition.

DU does cause cancer, it’s 50-75% less likely to than normal uranium but that doesn’t mean that all of the radioactivity just magically goes away
