Why are modern fighters such behemoths? Shouldn't engineers make them smaller, so they could be more convenient?

Big heavy engine and ordnance requires big wings, high speeds requires large control surfaces.
Jets fly faster and higher than could have been imagined for a WW2 fighter, while carrying a more ordnance than the heavy bombers of the period

But ultimately it's the size of the engines and air inlets to feed the engines that is dictating the size - they need a lot more space than a piston engine.
Even in WW2 that was the same: You either had an in-line piston engine or a radial engine, and that would determine the length and width of the fuselage.

why do people drive corvettes when they could drive smart cars?

Uuuuuuuh . . . Higher payload?

But, user, in OP's fantasy of retrofitted Mustangs with modern jet engines they can easily turn and barrel roll pushing Mach 2. Why can't engineers just make that possible?

Reminder that the F-35 can carry the full load of a B-17 at the cost of stealth

Heavier payloads require larger airframes to achieve lift.
Go back to middle school.

because the engine and avionics suites and weapons are literally larger than the fucking Mustang itself you piece of shit!

Look at how much faster the P-51 is! F-35 shills BTFO'd

Fuck off Pierre Sprey.

I forgot to mention fuel.
You need a shit load of that

>P-51
>Proven, reliable, cheap platform
>all unnecesarry features of a fighters like radar or missiles are absent
>F-35
>a lemon
>bloated
>over budget
Why doesn't US build fleets of 100k P-51s?

because you will need 100K pilots , plus the crew to maintain all the planes . retard

Get off the internet, Pierre.

Based

Payload, gas, jet engines, radar, electric systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, and lift. How about you try fitting all that shit into a P-51 airframe.

>high speeds requires large control surfaces

Im not sure, but its probably the jews' fault somehow

THEN MAKE THE ENGINES SMALLER. Closet sized computers were compressed to the size of a book, but we can't do the same with jet engines?

>being THIS retarded
I won't even bother writing an argument as it's probably too complicated for you to understand

Engine size is limited partially by the fact that the intake needs to maintain a certain cross-sectional area in order to draw in the designed volume of air. Modern turbofans are actually even larger than early turbojet engines due to the addition of a bypass that allows air to flow around the engine core, cooling it and providing thrust at lower speeds. This makes engines much more fuel efficient, but larger.

oof

>posting shit
wew

Engine power is directly proportional to size for turbine engines, user

Even just turbo-prop'd Mustangs would make decent COIN, they perform practically as well as the Super Tucano when it comes to performance.

But they do user, but they only move ever so slightly when at high speeds.
And you need those large control surfaces for low speed handling on those high speed bodies

You’re not the first to think this

>Why can't engineers just make that possible?
They can.

OP needs to be directing his ire at the people writing requirements for the planes, not the engineers trying to make those requirements into reality.

This. When people demand more ordinance you have to have a larger airframe to carry it. Lower ordinace carring capacity and range requirements and then planes get a lot smaller.

don't know if anybody cares or if it's not even a big surprise, but somebody who isn't me had a 2 star general at an Airforce event confirm that 6th gen fighters are already deployed

smart cars catch a high wind on the highway and they spin out.

b-but muh f-104

because back then circumcision was not popular. Nowadays all mutts have mutated penis syndrome and must make bigger planes to compensate. Sadly, they lead the design trend.

Why would anyone drive a Smart?
