No it's not probable at all. Possible yes, not probable. Leaving base on your own to go into a town would get you kidnapped or killed almost instantly. Hence bergdahl. The problem would be getting out undetected and getting back in undetected. The fob has security to prevent this from happening and shooting someone sneaking in or out would be expected of those on watch. That scene from the hurt locker broke the whole movie for me.

Me and a team mate used to do it at night in Sangin 2010. Well, really just him. I'd take over on the GBOSS (giant TV/NV/FLIR camera on a 100 foot tower) and use the IR laser to point to nearby local wildlife. Coyotes, porcupine, dogs, the stray goat, people. He'd just go up on a post next to a bored lance coconut and tell them he was going to check his zero and not to worry. When he shot something, he'd leave his long gun on post and bring a 2x4, a knife, a Motorola and his pistol with him to the wire and lay the 2x4 over the c-wire and walk across it, then I'd talk him into whatever he shot over the radio. Goats he'd bring back, coyotes he'd just cut their tails off. He did all of this in flip flops, a poncho liner jacket and a beanie, sometimes 300 meters outside the wire, but always at night.

Also this sounds more like a medium to small sized FOB where you'd have more freedom compared to a base like leatherneck.

From his account he was supposed to be on gaurd duty and just walked the fuck off. He was on a small FOB and it was in the middle of the night so it wasn't that hard to do.
If you're interested there's a podcast that does a fairly good job on going through his whole escapade, though I think they take his side a little much.

I was a lance he was a sarge. Our PB had about 100 dudes on it. Our team was killing a lot of dudes at the time so the company we were supporting let us get away with murder. The guy on the GBOSS night shift was usually a fat shitbag who never did his job anyway, so me taking over for 30 minutes meant he could go eat or smoke. Leatherneck was garrison btw, not a deployment.
