2.4 miles is fine. The idea is that air superiority, guided munitions, etc is used to knock out the shore defences with antinaval capability. Then the railguns are moved in and turn the shoreline to ash. Then the Marines amble onto the beach, have a crayon picnic, and so on. The railgun step is to cheaply prevent D-Day Landing situations.
