FIM-92

Was this thing real fucking good in Afghanistan or was it's impact overrated? I find it hard to think that a single weapon system was a the definitive game changer as normies claim it was seeing how 3rd parties were also shipping in ATGMs, small arms and other weapons. Is it a better MANPAD than the Strella or Igla?

Yeah

whether or not it was mind blowingly amazing doesn’t matter because it took them from “have not” to “have”

it was good but it was no game changer
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Soviet_aircraft_losses_during_the_Soviet–Afghan_War
it didn't lead no a big increase in aircraft losses
apparently it's biggest impact was to increase on altitude at which pilots flew decreasing the effectiveness of their attacks or something like that

Pretty much this. Soviet pilots were expecting it and the military doctrine was too slow and rigid to respond. Once the threat was understood, the chopper pilots and CAS planes were never as effective as they were supposed to be.

It was great against the Soviet heavy helicopters. Hinds would just come in and fuck up villages.

There isn’t a single case in history of a shoulder fired anti air missle destroying a plane or helicopter.

Kek.

?????

theres a video that floats around here of a helicopter getting blown out of the sky by a bunch of goat herders with a strela.

Sure thing, Ji,

Some will make the argument that after Soviets adjusted their doctrine, the Stinger lost its effectiveness and thus was a non-factor. However, this is a fundamental lie. While yes, the loss rates returned to more reasonable levels, Soviet aircraft were no longer able to operate at low altitude with impunity like they had previously. "Hard decks" (altitude restrictions closer to the ground) were established much higher up, which drastically reduced the effectiveness of Soviet aviation, especially their helicopters.

To put this into perspective, imagine if you had a handgun and your opponent had a knife. So long as you stayed out of his reach, you could move around him with impunity, not worrying at all about him unless you were right next to him. Then this opponent gets a musket with a hard range of 50 feet. You can no longer move in that bubble around him like you used to. Even if he might miss, it's no longer an acceptable risk when you could stay beyond 50 feet. That being said, your handgun has shitty sights and you're going to miss most of your shots at that range, but you'd rather miss 80% of your shots and be safe than get shot yourself. This being contrasted with the previous situation, where because you were so close you were hitting 80% of your shots.

It isn't that big of a deal.
Before we exported the Stinger to the muj:
>Britain exported Blowpipes to muj
>US exported FIM-43 Redeye to muj
>HN-5's exported from China, that Pakistan exported to muj

Also Relevant:
Every BMP, BTR, etc was issued with a SA-7 or SA-14

user, i have bad news, anything made by the West in the past 50 years is inherently better than any Warsaw pact piece of equipment.

Well said user

Bingo

the real redpill here is operation redwings was to kill or capture a militia who had access to manpads and that is what shot down the chopper

You are a fucking moron.
t. former Air Defense dude

MANPADS serve a very similar role as snipers. Their overall damage may not be great, but all it takes is one with overwatch on a good position to really fuck up your day and deny that air avenue of approach.

How is this a red pill?

Is he okay?

Based yeah poster.
