Every camouflage pattern is a compromise. Every camouflage pattern works better in some environments than others. This was true even of olive drab, a century ago.
Multicam is a super specialized pattern with a color palette designed for deserts and arid areas with mostly dead brush and a little bit of living vegetation. It is okay in certain very specific environments, like dying scrubland, and temperate softwood forests from Thanksgiving to Christmas, and absolute unmitigated dogshit with no redeeming features everywhere else.
The irony here is that six-color desert was replaced because it was "too dark" and "too busy" for featureless empty Kuwaiti sand, but was actually nearly perfect once it faded a bit and got a little dust on it. And for rocky Afghan trails, it would have been at least as good as Multicam and far, far better than UCP.

The Russians copy every camo pattern used on any significant scale by Western armies. They copied M81 Woodland, they copied DPM, they copied French Lizard and CCE and Flecktarn.
They do this so that Spetsnaz has the option of impersonating Western troops. We used to call this kind of thing a war crime, and when the Germans did it in the ETO we tried them as spies and hanged them whenever we captured them, but the Russians have guessed--perhaps correctly--that we don't have the balls to do that kind of thing any more.
The Russians copy every camo pattern we use, including stuff that SOCOM purchases that isn't official issue like ATACS and Realtree. I do not claim they're using any of it in Syria, though it wouldn't surprise me.

They also do this, because traditionally their doctrine towards camouflage has been different than western doctrine. Namely, the west has always been looking for a 'one size fits all' camo pattern, with it now accumulating to multicam. They want something that is okay for most places. Meanwhile in the soviet union they have different camo patterns for different regions, times of year etc.Highly specialized for every environment. In practice however, logistics make it very hard to have that many different types of uniforms, and also developing all kinds of different camo patterns yourself is expensive, thus it is easier to just copy them.

UCP is unironically a really good pattern when given opportunity to get dirty in the environment. It has a fairly neutral color so when rolling around in a set environment begins to blend in very well.
The problem is, the army makes a huge deal of your uniform not having stains and being as clean as possible. Most pictures taken of UCP are of some guy who is literally out there just for the pictures, so naturally he will have the cleanest uniform possible and likely has been in garrison since he was issued the uniform.
when you you actually find the rare pictures of guys who have actually been out in the field for any real amount of time, their uniform generally blends in very well.
