I moved from the northeast to the deep south for work (in what is nationally considered a redneck industry). As far as I can tell, the way to be accepted is to be competent, honest, and keep your business to yourself.

Southerners can seem really odd until you figure out that they just signal virtue differently at the fringe. Every so often you'll run into a "great southern woman" that doesn't really want groups she doesn't like to have civil rights any more than some raging feminist in Brooklyn or asshole statist in Boston does. Same shit mindsets still exist, the targets are just different. Who they consider "their tribe" is just different.

As a heads up, at least in my neck of the deep south a LOT of things are said and done for show. That's not inherently bad, but southerners can really get short-circuited when you don't pick up on the things they want you to be impressed by. Took me a while to figure that out, and then even longer to figure out what they were really telling me when they started a conversation out of left field.
