What is the appeal in owning assault rifles? At least with a handgun I can see the fun in recreational shooting at the range but what possible environment is there where an AR can be enjoyed? Is the fun in just owning a cool piece of equipment and tricking it out? The preparation for a doomsday? Not trying to hate, just trying to justify a purchase for myself. All I do is go to the range and I don't see it being a whole lot of fun there.

It's a lot of fun to shoot at the range, just like a handgun, but over much longer distances and you pretty much have to do it outdoors for it to be worthwhile. Now's a good time to buy one, prices a few months ago were as low as they've ever been (and probably ever will be) and they're starting to go up now. You probably don't have very much time.

Buy new. Look at Aero Precision or Palmetto State Armory if you feel like you could assemble one from parts. Aero is midrange but nicely made, PSA is cheaper but has a great reputation for what they are. Ruger, S&W, and the above two as well as many others make pre-assembled rifles as well that are affordable and good.
For a little while you could buy parts to put together a PSA for literally $300 before sights/optics/magazines. It's generally cheaper to build than buy. There are options cheaper than PSA, like Bear Creek Arsenal, but they don't have as good of a reputation and seem to truly be bottom of the barrel.
Looking at used rifles, I very rarely see any actual deals.

Why wouldnt shooting a gun of any type that could comfortably be fired be fun? I dont understand how you can have fun with handguns and not a rifle unless you only have access to indoor ranges or a 25 yard range.
Rifles are for greater accuracy and longer ranges from both the braced positions and free handed positions. The extra energy can be a plus if you intend to hunt/varmint but if not it, along with the more aerodynamic bullet designs, still is great for the extra range.

I grew up in Massachusetts for 15 years where you basically have zero self defense rights here. When I was attending middle school and high school there were an average of 5-10 fights in the schools per year. There were instances where some kid would literally jump another innocent kid for no reason whatsoever. The victims would also fight back in defense, and rightfully so. However, even the victim/defender would get the same punishment as the attacker which usually involved a week or two suspension from school. The school systems leadership would even tell students over the intercoms the fighting in ALWAYS wrong no matter what the situation is. So if you're being attacked unprovoked then you were expected let the attacker kick the shit out of you until some teachers or staff jumped in to stop things.
