I was on a the wait list for my club for about a year. It was worth it though, since it's a huge club with a ton of ranges, some even 24/7. I only downside no muzzle over berm due to concerns of bullets leaving range and getting to neighbours. NRA membership was also a requirement, since it's part of their insurance. They never check to see if you're current though, and cheapest NRA membership is 10 bucks.

I always feel fortunate reading these threads about lack of nearby ranges. I live in South Central Wisconsin and there's a 100 yard private range 5 minutes from my house that requires a $150 a year membership that I skip for one of the other nearby ranges that are only $40 a year including the one that goes to 200 yards. There's also a 1200 meter range 30 minutes away but that shit is like $500 a year. All of these are within an hour of Madison. Some require volunteer hours some don't.

There are also some public ranges but I try to avoid those since the general public is retarded. It's even easier once the corn is down and I can shoot to 500 yards across the road from my house.

Playing devil's advocate here, if you lived in a big city why would you need to shoot past 25 yards? There's a short list of guns that are practical in a big city: a handgun, a shotgun with a barrel of 20" or less, and maybe a pistol-caliber carbine or an AR pistol. None of these are long-range weapons, and anything else is made of pure LARP when it comes to city living.

make a weekend camping trip out of it where it's legal. Build some gongs, get a range finder, try to make a friend who might even go with you, and a lot of amminition

Okay but you aren't going to be hunting anything in a big city, you aren't going to form a militia there, and it's a bad place to be into precision rifles because there's noplace to take really long shots, whether on a range or off it. Also, hobbies are by definition not practical - they're things you do for fun instead of practicality. If it's practical, then it's not a hobby, it's training.

While a valid point in the countryside, this is an invalid point in big cities, where there are few hunters because there's nothing to hunt, the few people who do hunt are lousy shots because they go hunting as a once-a-year vacation with their buddies, and there are nearly no places to take a 200-yard shot.

Seriously, ask country folk their opinions of people from the big city who come out to their neck of the woods on yearly hunting trips. You'll be treated to no end of stories about what a bunch of dumbasses they are, how they can't hit the broad side of a barn, and how they're often downright dangerous from lack of skill and common sense.

Wrongo. I'm . I grew up within sight of the Empire State Building, moved to the SF Bay Area for college, and only recently left after 25 years for the same reasons everybody else who's 1) white and 2) not on welfare is getting out of there.

Nor are you going to be doing any such thing in any big city anywhere. If you live in a big city, you should buy guns that are practical for a big city.
