As an Aussie I would like to see us continuing to grow our navy and airforce as a western nation in the east we are short on local friends and have plenty of enemies.

The US is the leech in this equation. They don't make anything or produce anything that anyone needs. They can't service their own domestic market. They are resorting to threats, now proven impotent, over not buying their natural gas that they don't even have the capability to transport [nor the capability to even build the fleet in the first place].

Because they will never be able to produce an air force and navy that can successfully secure those interests on their own, Australia will always be reliant on some greater power to secure the flow of good into and out of the country. The only options these days are the US and China, and while being attached to America has its problems, being a Chinese vassal state would make things even worse.

Only in lieu of that 'homegrown industry' I mentioned, Industry 4.0 presents a crucial opportunity for Australians to pivot towards self-sufficient industry - as you mentioned we have all the resources, and automation/robotics will make us capitalistically competitive with 3rd world slave labour. Until then we just need to balance the US and Chinese interests, and do everything to decrease the odds of a war starting until we're ready.

They do have a large land area, but they’re significantly closer to potential hostile powers, have significantly less arable land, and lack the internal system of rivers that made the eastern half of the US so easy to settle and trade with before the railroads were built. If Australia had a significantly larger population, most of its limitations when it comes to industrial output could be solved, but that runs into the farmland issue head on, and would likely make them even more dependent on imports.

Look at your coastline. The answer is obvious. Most ships which are build in Germany end up as export goods. In fact we don't just build considerably more ships than Australia, we also export much much more of them.
