Why are WW1 pics so horrifying? Not even the ones that have been altered to make some aesthetic wallpaper or something, but even just the raw photographs.

Well you have to consider the quality of cameras at the time and what they could and could not pick up, mixed with the complex textures that went with the trenches and a literal fog of war, it's not too hard to believe that a horror movie could be made from it, which they did do

Probably because the landscape is pretty surreal. Everything normal is gone and practically everything you can see is related to war. In other pictures you can still see that this is a street, that was a baker's shop, here's a road, this is a jungle etc., but in WWI western front pictures it's nothing but craters and trenches. It's like something out of a dream.
