>§ 95.591 Sales of FRS combination radios prohibited.
>Effective September 30, 2019, no person shall sell or offer for sale hand-held portable radio equipment capable of operating under this subpart (FRS) and under any other licensed or licensed-by-rule radio services in this chapter (devices may be authorized under this subpart with part 15 unlicensed equipment authorizations).
>What are digital modes A way to connect your radio to a computer and send text, forms, various data, e-mail, images, etc. >What is a good radio Depends on what you NEED in a radio. If you don’t know, a CCR (Cheap Chinese Radio) like a Baofeng is a good place to start. >What is Digital Voice/D-Star/DMR/System Fusion These are on-board digital protocols that are a part of a particular radio’s operating system. Analog voice is converted via codec to a digital stream, which is then routed through a repeater and out somewhere else on the planet. For example, Wyoming, USA to Yokosuka, Japan. >What is a repeater A repeater takes your radio’s transmission, amplifies it from a more topographically-sound location, effectively increasing the range of your handheld up to 100mi.
So whats Jow Forumsg's callsign list? You DO have a list of callsigns that contains every relevant person in your area so you can talk about them over radio without using their real names, RIGHT? Ask me for further info
Nathaniel Ortiz
Under the one condition that an EMP goes off and directly affects where I am then you are right. In any other situation the radio will probably be fine.
Justin Murphy
>ask me for more info Here is me asking

Well, a friend and I started with Baofengs a few years ago. First it was more like irl shitposting in our area. But we didnt like the idea anybody could hear us while we were talking about Mrs Smiths hot ass or old man Mueller's beer can covered lawn. So we thought out a radio lingo inspired by Generation Kill.
Here's how it works: 1) I printed out a map of our (very) small town 2) Every household we know/care about and stores, bars etc got a certain callsign (for example the Smith Family would be "Paintbucket" or something. 3) Then every household got its own callsign according to its "rank" in said household. Usually the Male is "actual". E.g. "Paintbucket actual" would be Mr. Smith. His wife would be "Paintbucket One", the oldest son "Paintbucket two" etc.
I know its a little childish and not very OPSEC but its a thing and I kinda like it. We also downloaded the USMC radio field manual and try to act according to it
Leaving for a few weeks for AT, can't wait to get that paycheck and order up my Yaesu VX-6R and diamond SRH320A. Will be pretty much exactly like pic related.
>I know its a little childish Nah man, actually it's pretty fucking based considering you're "only" civilians who shitpost >and not very OPSEC Quite contrary. That's how mil radio has worked since WW1. It's simple yet effective and as long as nobody got your map (which contains the callsigns I assume) it's pretty safe. Let's not forget we're not at war or something. >and I kinda like it me too and I will shamelessy copy it
Owen Garcia
All I've got for now is a cb in my vehicle. Better than nothing I suppose
Luis Ward
>not just using an old metal ammo box.
Besides, we are always watching the sun for them, so it's not exactly something that's going to sneak up on us.
James Taylor
ops should have watched the video first, just assumed it was a solar flair
Luis Fisher
Why don't they make scanners the size and quality of those Yaesu transcievers? I don't need to transmit and don't want to pay out the nose for it, but handheld scanners are always fuckhueg in comparison.
Jacob Long
Bamp!
Landon Wood
oh fugg that yaesu looks way more kino than the two baochang uv-xr's i bought. should i get one???
I just got a UV5R, where's the image that shows me how to set it up so I don't get my dog shot for using a frequency I'm not licensed to use?
William Lewis
>Can RX pretty much anything >water proof >durable >powerful Yes
Jayden Morales
I love mine user, it's a very well build little radio. Now is also a good time to get one. I was talking to a Yaesu rep and he said the model is going to be discontinued shortly in favor of digital radios.
Oh nice. Just ordered one, thanks! Wish they made an extended battery though Like the Baofengs have. I like to have more to hold onto, and this looks like it's about the size of a UV-5R which personally I find a tad to small. It's nitpicky, but yea. . .

90% of all modern electronics can resist emp.A piece of cardboard is enough of a protection

Hey guys! I'm looking to build my first antenna for a Baofeng and looking for more information. For example what are the advantages of a J Pole compared to a 1/4 wave ground plane? I've looked into antenna calculators but couldn't find any info about the diameter of the copper pipe. Is there a way to tune Antennas without an swr meter? And the final question: Are there any clear cut advantages to 70cm over 2m? With the testing I've done with my friend it seems that 70cm has higher range or is it just because the standard antenna is better suited for it? Tanks a Lot!
Thank you very much dear user. Saddly I'm a eurofag and comparable products don't seem to exist here/ are very expansive.
Jack Wood
probably not. just stick to the frs frequencies, which you can look up online, at least for transmitting. I would still use full power tho. you can listen into everywhere else
Eli Young
At the power levels an HT works at, there will be little to no difference in performance between your two options. If anything to compare them, the ground plane takes up a bigger "footprint" due to the ground radials sticking out the side, but will be a bit shorter overall in height. It's also probably a bit easier to make.
The Jpole is nice that it has no radials, so it's a very small footprint and could be made portable even by using window-line as the build material. It will be longer overall though, due to the quarter-wave matching stub element of it.
If this is for a fixed install, I'd go with the ground plane. Easy to make, very robust. If you want something portable, go with a window-line Jpole. If you want to make the copper pipe Jpole, those are very robust if done right and can be good for a long term install.
Either way, the biggest important factor to both's performance will be how high and unobstructed you get them, and the quality of the feedline you use.
Between 2m and 70cm, the practical differences are pretty minor. Most hams prioritize 2m because it's more popular in most areas, and also, sometimes an antenna made for 2m also works fairly well on 70cm. The opposite there would not be true.
Oliver Martinez
I just got two 5-Watt UV-5Rs, and I have an 8-Watt one coming in. That said, what frequencies can I use to fuck around with for short range until I get a license? Or I guess, please plainly explain what to do and what not to do.
I already did basically everything this guide said to do.
Samuel Sanchez
There's literally no legal way to use these radios without a license in the US. That said, if you stick to the FRS, GMRS, and MURS band frequencies, chances are very very slim you'd ever have an issue.
Go beyond those, and you're asking to get fox hunted by boomers with PVC and Tape measure antennas, or the ABC troope.
Dylan Cox
Just use MURS >MURS is licensed by rule. This means an individual license is not required for an entity to operate a MURS transmitter if it is not a representative of a foreign government and if it uses the transmitter in accordance with the MURS rules outlined in 47 C.F.R. Part 95 Subpart J. There is no age restriction regarding who may operate an MURS transmitter.
>There are five MURS channels and the channels are either 11.25 kHz or 20.00 kHz each. The channel frequencies and (bandwidth) are: 151.820 MHz (11.25 kHz) 151.880 MHz (11.25 kHz) 151.940 MHz (11.25 kHz) 154.570 MHz (20.00 kHz) 154.600 MHz (20.00 kHz)
Nah, you'll be fine. user. Just stay off police / radio frequencies, and use FRS / GMRS or MURS frequencies. Codeplugs are out there. Funny, Baofengs in 1W mode meet all requirements except FCC certification for MURS. Literally not doing anything illegal if you use them there.
Christian Hall
Just bought a 5-pack of BaoFeng UV-5s
What am I in for?
Gavin Flores
well if you are anything like me >receive radios >download chirp and excitedly program them with all the best channels >remember you don't have 4 friends or family members that really care about you or want to be able to contact you >throw them in a bugout bag and tell yourself you'll make friends in the apocalypse
Daniel Green
>receive radios >download chirp and excitedly program them with all the best channels >remember you don't have 4 friends or family members that really care about you or want to be able to contact you >throw them in a bugout bag and tell yourself you'll make friends in the apocalypse
LOL, that about covers it. ^^^^^^^^
I have kids, so I make them take little baofengs that fit in their pockets anytime they're out playing or we're at the park. Get them used to using them and trying to get them used to various radio chatter like from Gen. Kill. My son wanted to upgrade to a bigger radio with longer antenna like mine. Gonna get him a radio chest holder before Halloween.
Well if you're anything like me >receive radios >go on radioreference.com and find local freqs >program radio >spend a couple of weeks scanning to see what freqs are in use my area >cycle all my radio batteries 3 times before fully charging them prior to storage >post it on radio box for date of last discharge/charge cycle (cycle every 6 months)
William Gray
Sounds about right You sound like a good dad, user. Hope Halloween is a fun one This sounds like good advice, but I don't have the knowledge to say if it is or not.
Robert Ross
Should I go with the UV-5X3 >Tri-band, 5W Or BF-F8HP >Dual-band, 8W
I'd be getting a new antenna regardless. So, more power or an extra band? Also, does the F8HP have the same features as the X3?
I already had two F8HPs, they are v3.0 of the org radios with what two watts more output. On the 5x3s, everyone says no one uses the third frequency it uses, so it's a dead and useless band so why bother. But here's the deal, since it so disused, I figure for quick, somewhat private convos., me and mine can drop to a pre-assigned freq in that third band, have our quick convo and then move on. Just work out comm sec. beforehand.
I honestly have to many radios, all in F8Hps and 5x3s.
Brody Sanchez
Am I even going to notice the bump in power between the two? How much more range does 7-8 watts get me over 4-5?
Michael Allen
The 5X3 says it has "scan frequency by range, DTMF remote commands, programming menu, reset lockout and synchronize display modes" features.
Does the F8HP have these features as well?
Grayson Brooks
Also, the F8HP display looks like it will display more shit over the 5X3. Is it upgraded over the other models?
5X3 also says it has: VOX Talk Around Mode Busy Channel Lock-Out (BCLO) Transmission Time Out Channel Receive Only (TX OFF) Frequency Reverse Squelch Tail Elimination (STE) Work Mode (Selectable VFO/ Menu Lockout)
Same question, does the F8HP?
Cooper Thomas
I'm trying to pick up my local Sheriff's office dispatch using Chirp, but I'm getting nothing. I'm still able to pick up FM radio and transmit to my other Baofeng. Is this simply an issue with my antenna(stock antenna) or am I fucking up somehow?
I'm very new to this so don't fear to assume I'm stupid.
Anthony Morales
They are probably on trunked p25 or something
Isaiah Wood
Can you pick up the NOAA weather? That's the best channel to make sure your radio rx's properly because it's always transmitting.
Dominic Cooper
Why does everyone like the abbreeeee so much? The hys fiberglass gooseneck is clearly superior
My understanding is the Abreee antennas have better coils and what not. Have no clue about the HYS antennas. Frankly if they made them, I'd be buying only Nagoya, Diamond and just a few others. Sadly, those companies don't make the antennas I want.
David Jones
OK, I got that. Anyone deeply into all this can confirm table data?
Landon Peterson
I don’t the fucking thing sucks.
Elijah Peterson
Look at the chart the HYS is breddy good too.
Jose Williams
After reading these threads off an on ad not understanding much i'm looking to get my first radio(s), both for hunting and maybe running around in the woods yelling bang.
Should I go with the F8HP or 5R as babbies first?
Easton Lewis
I just want to add, the power required for an EMP like this is so insanely large that it's completely impossible. As you increase the range of the EMP, the power required increases so exponentially that it is almost a vertical increase in power required. A human caused EMP wouldn't and shouldn't be of any concern to anyone other than military.
Gavin Hernandez
I can, I made the table and took the measurements.
While the HYS Gooseneck Fiberglass did have the best overall broad band response, it does not have the best gain performance on all those bands. The 42" Abbree for sure beats it in RX ability.
Also, the HYS GN FG just kind of feels cheaper. The bending part is weak and it just sort of flops around on it's own.
Matthew Richardson
Just tried it. Works perfectly with full signal. So for some reason I just can't pick up my local SO's dispatch
Luis Nelson
This is absolutely consistent with what I have experienced between the two.
Easton Torres
I have all the antenas on the chart and the Na-77, abbreee and hys are all great
Adrian Sanchez
I fallowed some link someone posted to find local police frequencies and none of them seemed to be right. I did manage to find my local car to car/dispatch frequency by just scanning the lower range for a few hours. for me it was 154.925. Though in my little town they only speak a few times an hour I just got lucky. You can try lowering your scanning increments to 10 or 5 in case they are using some odd frequency, but it will take longer.
Jonathan Anderson
In my area the state police are the only ones still using analog radios. Have to listen to the city cops on sdr# and dsd+
Mason Gomez
Anyone know if Software Defined Radio's are going to be effected my this Bill? I know they have been trying to get rid of them for a while now. Some software for these^ will supposedly let you view the entire spectrum all at once so you can quickly find any activity.
I'm currently studying for my ham license. I really want to get into sdr/data transmission just because it seems like forgotten tech. I'm looking at buying two hackrfones with an omnidirectional antenna. I all got started when i found this youtube video about using a tv tuner to download weather sat images. I did it they look like shit but i'm looking for something that could take me further down this rabbit hole. Also i'm looking for a handheld/antenna just to learn general voice stuff (no experience with any of this just looking for something i can learn with down the road).
Any recommendations for stores off aliexpress? I'm honestly getting a little blitzed and feeling like its time i treat myself before the Cold war v2 "tariff boogaloo" kicks off
VSWR measurments. a value of 1.00 (meaning 1:1 ratio) would be theoretical perfect. As the number increases from there, you'll have greater signal output loss and reflected power due to the antenna not being matched to the frequencies being used.
In an HT under 10 watts, I scaled that chart and the colors to be:
VSWR of 1:1 to 3:1 = excellent VSWR of 3.01:1 to 10:1 = workable, but not great VSWR of 10.01:1 or greater = bad, do not use
Jeremiah Mitchell
Lads are any of these radios USB chargeable? Something workable for multi car trips.
Mason Nguyen
Will the bill in OP impact handheld radios like Baofengs? Should I pick up a couple right now if they’ll become hard to find?
Christian Diaz
this thread seems close but it may be a Jow Forums topic:
I'm a paranoid know nothing and am wondering if there's a such thing as signal jammers etc radio wifi or what have you.
are they possible to make?
Kayden Walker
you can get a USB charger cable for most of the baofengs. it will still require the dock if you are not using one of the extended batteries with a charger port though
Dominic Brooks
Yes, but you'll be fox hunted and FCCed immediately if you make one and turn it on.
>ing as signal jammers etc radio wifi or what have you. Effective ones are very expensive, and the chinkshit is very ineffective. I've built relatively effctive jammers for remote controls (434 and 868MHz) and a few for wifi (only managed to make 2.4MHz ). I've learned that if you want something that can effectively jam in a relatively wide band, you should use wide sweeps with irregular discontinuities. Cellphones are very hard to jam because they use a shitload of frequencies, modulation schemes that are very good at countering interference, and the base stations are too many.
Austin Sanders
goddamn fcc still want one, mad scientist style
Levi Richardson
Not really. They will react if you try to fuck with bands mobile phones and government agencies use.I've made illegal transmissions with 5W rf modems for years, bothering my entire neighborhood in the process, and there's hasn't been a single complaint from FCC.I know I act like a nigger but I really don't care.
John Walker
Thanks friends.
Jeremiah Young
go on whereabouts would I start looking for instructionals, or even what they're really called
Benjamin Bell
I’m also asking because I’m a complete newfag. I’d like to have some way of communicating with friends/family/assistance in the event of a natural disaster, and the suggestions that I’ve always heard was baofengs. Will they soon become scarce?
Jack Gomez
You'd need to know some basic EE and programming, but building jammers is simpler than a lot of people think. All you need to do is get a rfic module for the target band, preferably ones that have frequency hopping, and abuse it.I used si4463 for remote control jammers and sx1280 for wifi. Also, if you have a very specific target in mind, say a particular garage with remote control gates, you can jam it from mile away with a mere 1W.
Wanting to get a pair for me innawoods, and one to keep at the house in case I get got, so my wife can know. This a good deal?
David Parker
Anyone know of a vendor who is GTG for the UV-9R Plus? I don't want to get fake shit and it seems hit or miss on eBay
Luis Martinez
I got mine off Amazon.
Adam Allen
Question for those who know about antenna design.
I'm loving my new Abbree foldable antenna. I'm looking to add a counterpoise (rat tail) to increase performance. Basically it's a piece of wire that plugs into the antenna and hangs down below.
Traditionally, it plugs into the base of the antenna, however, the antenna port on Baofengs is recessed, which makes it difficult to get a ring terminal in there.
Fortunately, the abree has a removable adapter piece at the base. I was thinking of putting the counterpoise between the base and the main antenna body. However, this "adapter" is not intert, it contains pic related.
Would it be permissible to place my counterpoise above pic related?
This. Modern electronic components are surprisingly rugged. Sure, the glass screen of an iPhone will shatter if you throw it on the ground, but it's obviously not made of the same stuff that the power grid is. Do you think EMPs aren't generated every time voltage and amperage change rapidly during changes in demand for power? When the power comes back on after a blackout? That there isn't a localized EMP every time you crank the starter on your car, (unless you drive electric or hybrid)? EMPs are not a major threat. FFS, some people with pacemakers can get MRI scans, and today's machines are Teslas more powerful than they were 30 years ago.
Benjamin James
>That there isn't a localized EMP every time you crank the starter on your car, (unless you drive electric or hybrid)? >he doesn't own a Chrysler that lets the radio cut out every time you rev the car high enough
Oliver Miller
The beauty of the Abbree, and in its stellar general performance, is that the counterpoise isn’t needed. The coil at the base of the antenna is the counterpoise.
