So, that still doesn't explain anything though. Why 4140 steel? Their other rifles are 41v45, their machinegun steel blend for their rifles like the m249 and m240. They seem really proud of that steel and it has good properties. Why would they use cheaper 4140 steel? It's still not milspec, neither is for an m4. But the 41v45 would be better, and not just a cheap shortcut option but a steel with actual reasons to be used instead of 4150. Why isn't it CHF? It's already not milspec, why not go CHF? It's not like anyone would bitch about their wrong-size wrong steel barrel being CHF.

And it's not like they don't make 4150 barrels for the civilian market already. This makes no goddamn sense.

If you're going for clone aesthetics there will of course be no real difference on parts. Milspec furniture and receivers and triggers all the same shit. However, the BCM is cheaper while offering a flat out superior barrel. That is fucking made by FN themselves. And of course, they offer actual clone lengths and features, which FN does not. So either way you go, with FN you pay more for worse.

Otherwise, it's actually fairly easy and affordable to assemble one. If you're deadset on the socom barrel you should get a Colt, because they're just that good. If you're cool with a lighter profile (you should be) then get a DD because theyre CHF and accurate as shit when compared to a BCM or FN. Use the EE to source most of the parts including the quad and you can slap the whole thing together for ~$900.

You can typically find the Olt Socom barrels for sale on the EE and even brownells and shit from time to time. Again, it won't be 'clone correct' but who gives a shit.
You can get the same accuracy out of a DD barrel btw. And save some weight, which is important unless you have full auto.

I really just want the whole SOCOM rifle. I'd toss a BCM stock on it, maybe swap the A2 grip out and throw a CCO or something on it
