I'm starting a new general, for all things competitive shooting related. USPSA, IDPA, 3-gun, brutality, benchrest; anything which involves head-to-head competition involving firearms should be discussed in this thread.
Daily reminder that if you're an american who carries a pistol, going to the occasional USPSA match is a great way to test your skills and network with other serious shooters, even if you don't have a gay-ass 5,000$ open rig.
I don't shoot steel challenge, but do a lot of guys run suppressors? Do they give any benefit, or are they just for fun?
Eli Sanchez
>but do a lot of guys run suppressors I have only seen one guy shoot with a suppressor in a match before. Been doing steel challenge frequently as I can over the past years. This is pretty much just for fun.
Jaxson Clark
Was thinking about this the other day, and behold, this thread appears. Any tips for a total nooblet thinking about joining a match (IDPA, USPSA)?
Adam Rodriguez
Pay attention to the targets of course, you might miss one. I did on my first USPSA match.
Austin Nelson
Figure out what your local match schedules look like, show up, and shoot. Mention that it's your first time and somebody will run you through the rules. All you need is a holster of some description and probably at least 4 magazines, plus a couple hundred rounds of ammo just to be on the safe side.
Go out, have safe, be fun.
Gavin Moore
How does 3-gun score? I cant tell by watching videos. They are shooting steel and not really going for accuracy. Is it just speed with points taken away for misses?
Parker Torres
I'm thinking of trying out some sort of pistol comp but I don't get to practice shooting multiple targets or shooting fast very often because I go to a shitty no rapid fire range. Is it acceptable to start doing competitions with that little experience? Also, I'm worried it might be awkward to use an LEM trigger for competition.
Cameron Stewart
>daily reminder that competitive shooting is not gunfighting >daily reminder that Jon wick movies are not a realistic depiction of proper tactics and techniques So anyway. Any good ispc comps nearish to gallup?
Lincoln Turner
Yes it’s fine. Just expect to practice, not to win.
Parker Ross
Start here to find a local match.

Aiming and shooting under stress is good for you though. Whether you fill that void with competition, hunting, having other people judge you, or all of the above it will make you better at it.
Hudson Jones
I never denied that. It can be good training but I've seen entirely too many LARPers who cant tell the difference

Haven't participated myself, but from what I gather it's time based, best time wins obviously. You get stiff penalties to times if you fail to engage or fail to hit a target; so even if you have to take 3-4 shots to hit it, be sure to hit everything. Obviously morr misses means more reloads, which will compound your time to complete the course. Events need to be completed in a certain amount of time before you run out. Breaking the rules (ie; engaging a target with the wrong ammunition, pointing a weapon up range, etc) will get you disqualified from competition.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Whoops,

>Haven't participated myself, but from what I gather it's time based, best time wins obviously. Not really, your scoring on targets (A, C, D or missing/noshoot) will effect you more than time >You get stiff penalties to times if you fail to engage or fail to hit a target; so even if you have to take 3-4 shots to hit it, be sure to hit everything. More like penalties to points, but otherwise yeah >Events need to be completed in a certain amount of time before you run out. No >Breaking the rules (ie; engaging a target with the wrong ammunition, pointing a weapon up range, etc) will get you disqualified from competition. Yeah, also be sure to keep finger out of trigger guard when you're not shooting
Blake Ramirez
Nvm, just saw your correction, thought you were talking about USPSA type comp
Luis Martinez
Here's my glock in 40 I built for uspsa limited. Haven't tried it out yet.
I'm hoping to try that next year. Any advice for newfag?
William Adams
Use a proper holster, bring at least 200 rounds if they just do 4 stages.
Jonathan Harris
was thinking of starting with the .22 rifle. 3 25 round mags enough?
Caleb Turner
>too many LARPers who cant tell the difference I never understand why USPSA draws these weird discussions of practicality when it's basically the equivalent of string together a bunch of Bill drill variations together for time.
Nobody looks at an El Pres as more than it is, just a metric for judging your ability at a very specific skill.
Blake Russell
I mean, the intersection of speed and accuracy is the foundation of all self defense shooting, so it serves as great CCW training especially if shot from concealment, but at the end of the day it's just a sport. Nobody attaches an extreme level of practicality to football or baseball, outside of the base skills of teamwork and physical training they benefit.
Carter Johnson
How would one join like a amateur league? I feel I shoot ok but not really sure how I’d stack up in competition. I’m around Atlanta so not many like minded people around my area to network with.
Nathaniel Fisher
Depends on the type of competition. Action shooting in the US is organized by the USPSA, whereas 3 gun matches are mostly independent.
Look around for a competition basics class, or just show up and shoot a match someplace.
Jackson Murphy
I've got a sfp9 and Glock 34, as well as an ar. Any recommendations for belt and mag holders for them? Stuck in leaf land if it makes a difference
