Yeah, that's an important one. It's easy to get focused on the details of operating/checking an unfamiliar firearm, especially a pistol, and point the muzzle in a stupid direction. Just wondering, do you or anyone else know if it's cool to pop out the rivet and put in a block of some sort to limit to 10 rounds? I've heard that if there's a range check the horsey police use some set of plungers to poke emptied mags down and see if they hold more than 10, so a wooden or other block inside the spring limiting loading to 10 would seem sufficient. I'm just thinking such a modification would perhaps remain legal for everyday circumstances, but in the case of SHTF it'd be one hell of a lot easier to pop off a bunch of floor plates and drop out such wooden blocks, bringing mags to full capacity without access to a drill. A paranoid fantasy mental exercise, I know, but indulge me.

Right, forgot to mention that. I'm such a wordy bastard and often forget my main point. First thing that bothered me about the pinned-to-10 30-round mag which came with my carbine was that it was obviously impossible to clean properly. Fucking rivet. A block which just drops out with the spring would make that so easy.

Fairly easy to fit, too. Just put in something shaped nicely, smooth so nothing catches, and test load. Keep trimming a bit at a time until you get to 10 and 11 just can't squeeze in.

A further advantage is that the spring itself isn't being unusually distorted by a rivet, instead compressing for its whole length the way its supposed to. A lot of full 10-round pinned mags can cause feeding issues on the first and even the second round owing to excessive spring tension with this pinned bullshit.

Yeah, I was surprised too. But whatever, it'll sit in a box forever most likely as I don't see the point having 30 rounds worth of magazine hanging off a carbine when I can only load 10. Stocking up on the shortest Glock 17 PMAGs I can get - 15 rounds riveted to 10 which keeps things sensibly tidy up front.

Normal armies have cleaning supplies and kits and oilers. The VC didn't always have access to that. All the ammo in ww2 was corrosive for example but they kept their weapons clean to preserve the metal. In the pacific it was impossible to keep on top of it because of the salty air, the heat and water everywhere. The jungles of vietnam were similar. You might be able to preserve your bore and action, but chances are if you have a wood stock and the finish on it rubs off or chips off, the wood will go and you can't stop it.
