Should I get a .357 lever action as my first rifle? If so, what should I expect to pay for it?

Do you live in a place where you need a straight-walled cartridge for deer hunting?

Yee-claw!

Sure, they're fun.
www.google.com "gunbroker lever action .357"

Yeah. Heavy brush, no shots beyond 75 yards, etc. I dunno about need, but it'd work just fine as far as I know.

Get a .22.

I don't need a .22, I've shot rifles before as a kid and shoot a 12 gauge now regularly.

But .22 is fun and cute.

45-70

Get a 30-30

30-30 rounds cost more though. If a local place has it I'll get it, but man.

Yee-claw. It would be a pretty good first rifle, recoil is easy, .38 Special and .357 Magnum can be pretty cheap, and with the extra barrel length the latter makes for a pretty good light rifle cartridge. Fun to shoot as well, and wouldn't be too intimidating for introducing noguns to shooting.
There's even special polymer tipped ammunition to give you somewhat improved aerodynamics and range.

.30-30 is all well and good, but .357 Magnum will do the job more than well enough at the ranges he's hunting at.
Mind that people hunt deer with 6" revolvers in the same caliber.

If you're very concerned about cost, mind that with a basic reloading set you could start to shoot .357 Magnum for as low as $0.15/rd (slightly less if you're doing lighter 'target loads'), the straightwalled case also makes it easy to deal with for newbs.
Consider also a revolver in the same chambering at some point.

I need to get one of those

I'll call up some local places and check prices/availability first things first, if they don't have any .30-30 or .357 lever actions for any sane prices I'll just order a .357 one online. Thanks user. I'll look into reloading too.

If you can use steel case in a lever, Tula .38spl is 9mm cheap. Not to mention, .357 mag is 5.56 cost, and it'll fucking zing out of a 16" barrel. People take smallish deer with 125gr at 1800fps.

get a .350 legend upper.

Sure why not? Easy to shoot, fun to shoot, not horrible expensive ammo.

It's your life/money. There's always better things to spend it on but if it makes you happy it was worth it

Can't speak for OP, but that isn't allowed in some states for deer hunting. Iowa (My state) is one of them.

YEE CLAW

Thanks anons I'll definitely pick it up. It was between this and building an AR which I can't really use to hunt so I'll definitely go with this. I'll pick up 1k rounds of cheap shit and maybe 100 rounds of buffalo bore stuff to go hunting with. Maybe I'll get into reloading and make my own super hot loads too, but that'll be further down the road.

That sucks. It's legal in MI. straight walled between 1.16 and 1.8 inches in length with .35 or greater diameter is allowed in the southern zone. .350 legend is 1.71 inches long and .35 in diameter Northern zone is any centerfire so it's fine there too.

Yee-claw

says it's legal in iowa.

Oh hi Intel-Crab! Hows the monitoring of Iran going?

Yee-claw, ah dun reckon a good ol' lever action .357 is a fine choice fer a first rifle partner, low recoil out that big ol' gun, cheaper ammo than yer standard rifle, an funner than a hoe down. Y'all'd've been a fool not to.

Made me smile
Thank you user

.45 Colt is shit as a rifle cartridge and was never used as such in the 1800s, .44-40 was so much better Colt had to offer their revolvers in that caliber to keep up.
