Got a few new steel mags, came covered in some oily greasy crap. (Not machine oil, maybe cosmoline if they still use that in 2019) what's the most efficient way to get this crap off my mags?

It's "shipping grease" and it's probably close to cosmoline.

Gasoline. Using it as a solvent not a combustible.

>Pour enough gas into the pan to cover half the mag.
>Disassemble and clean them off, using the brush to agitate the "grease" and get it out of "corners".

Took my vepr12 out to the skeet range last night.
Shot the first 3 rounds with an old bolt action 12ga I'd borrowed from my father in law to try out. It took some breaking in before everything worked flawlessly because I can only clean and undo so much when it's been sitting for decades in a basement. But working that bolt added a lot of fun and challenge to shooting double clays.
When I switched to my usual vepr12 again, it was almost hard to handle how there was no real recoil to speak of and the light trigger pull. A friend of mine thought the trigger on the bolty12 must be close to 10lbs.

Saigas and VEPRs are. Import is now banned though thanks to the Crimea thing so if you want one buy now while they are still semi available. There are a lot of AKs available from other former combloc countries still coming in and some US manufactured trash that you should avoid.

Some are, but the imports got killed by sanctions so it'll be a purely used market soon enough.
Some aks are bulgarian, yugoslavian, chinese, romanian, polish and the list goes on including some that are american made.

Nope. Romanian WASR-10 is pretty much exactly the same as a Russian AKM though, they didn't do any weird different things.

Actually, WASR lacks mag well dimples I guess so there is one minor difference. No weird trunnions from Poland or Serbia though and no whatever the fuck Hungary is doing. Bulgarians don't have any with the slant gas block right now so they are AK-100-style. That is probably the second closest after Romanian but they cost a premium right now.

I prefer woven cotton canvas slings. That is more old school. If you use your sling as a shooting aid Cotton canvas feels better to me it is very slightly stretchy where as nylon isn't. Both are extremely durable.
