They are about equal mechanical reliabilty wise. However it was lighter and a better recoil impulse than an AK. Tbh it's what the Soviet Union should've picked if they weren't going for the "Zerg Rush" making use huge numbers of troops and equipment to overrun the enemy mentality.

Not quite. The weight of the gun and action is very cool, but the trigger group is not well designed. The AK still beats it on the whole because of how simple the trigger group is.

Mechanically I'm pretty sure they're superior, mostly in an ergonomic way and I think their short stroke piston design is a bit better. Aesthetically, well it's subjective. I love the way the 58 looks with its weird wood chip stock, but AKMs are also pretty

It might be more ergonomic and lighter, but it has very little aftermarket support and mags are expensive and difficult to find. I've owned one, but lack of accessories and 55 dollar mags pushed me to sell it, combined with above ruled it out as inferior to an ak for shtf

I really don't think the AK FCG is simpler. VZ is a spring loaded striker held by another spring that is bent every time you pull the trigger.

out of a 16" barrel, 7.62x39 usually gets between 2300 and 2400 feet per second velocity. Out of a barrel that short, the velocity is probably closer to 1500 feet per second or lower, meaning just around .357 magnum velocity. At that point, why use a rifle?

The super short has a muzzle velocity of 570 m/s compared to the 700 m/s on the rifle length VZ.
