Looking into a first rifle and shotty for home defense and range fun. M&P15 Sport II and Mossberg 930 SPX Tactical are what I'm thinking on settling on after a lot of positive reading about both of them.

Any absolute "stay the fuck away" reasons not to go ahead and get them?

No

Any reason why you wouldn’t build your own rifle? Customization and all that jazz but, even if you have no experience, you’ll learn your rifle inside and out. If you can turn a wrench and hammer competently you already have the skills required.

Give me a guide

My first was a BCM.
It's solid, but maybe outside some people's budget (I worked fast food at the time and lived with my mother so saving up wasn't that big of a deal)
That being said, it is better than any other AR I have handled / shot.
Which is basically colts and weird rickety upper/lower combos
Also if you can have 30 rounds of .223 / 5.56 why bother with a 12g?

I learned from constant research.
There are videos of assembly from parts kits online.
Seriously don't just stop at field stripping, learn the thing inside and out.

I own the M&P 15 Sport II and so does my Dad. It’s a perfectly good AR15 but don’t expect it to match the performance of much more expensive ones. Whenever my friends want an AR for the first time I recommend it.

I have Mossberg 930 JM Pro that I use for Trap, Skeet, and bird hunting. From what I understand the SPX has a shorter barrel for more of a home defense role. For home defense I prefer pump action so I have a KelTec KSG and Winchester 1300 for that.

S&W MP15 is great. Owned mine for 5 years and just werks. If getting a shotgun just go with a pump and git gud. Maybe you could do MP15 and Maverick 88

Pertinent question to this thread. What do you load your HD 12 gauge and 5.56 with?

Remember when user blew out his eye building an AR because he didn’t know what he was doing? I remember.

what happened?

>a magical place

Usually 12g and 223.
Why did something not cycle for you?

I thought he was shooting suppressed without eye pro? Maybe I am misremembering.

How the hell does someone do that?

no just curious about specific loads other anons have chosen or researched.

He was fiddling with the gas system on a build that wasn’t working. Somehow all the pressure went through the gas tube and blew out near the charging handle where he face and eye was. The Jow Forums had to convince him it was serious enough to go to the hospital for because he was a noinsurance poorfag. Saving a few bucks on a rifle then emptying your wallet at the ER.

'nd that kids is why you research

Jokes aside how the fuck did he do that?
Did he over torque something until it fucking exploded or was it some pin he was trying to smell?

I don't have a 12g but I typically run PMC and normal ass 100rounds for $36 remington .223

I do not hunt, shoot pests, or otherwise anything besides range plinking so don't take my advice. You should study ballistics for a while if you don't already understand the balancing of powder loads to bullet mass & twist rates / barrel length.
It's a whole thing.

Yeah, I would personally never touch the m&p because the barrel is made from 4140 steel and not 4150, which I think is a pretty big difference in durability.

If you live in an area that Palmetto State Armory can ship to and you don't want to spend much then get one of their premium complete uppers and a complete lower.

If you want something considered very good for the price get a BCM upper on a Aero Precision lower. In terms of BCM I would suggest enhanced lightweight barrel over government, as it is basically just a better barrel contour no question about it. This shouldn't even be considered building, as it is literally getting 2 main parts.

Go on Arm or Ally website for toolcraft m16 cut fully auto bolt carrier groups and radian raptor charging handles.

There you have your guide. Complete lower, complete upper (and if the upper doesn't come with BCG and CH you can buy quality ones on that site).

sounds avoidable if you aren't retarded. by the way, how do you avoid that?

>M&P15 Sport II
I went with the Ruger AR556. It's basically the same thing, same price, but I liked the Ruger's screw-off handguard setup. Lots easier than compressing that D- spring.
>Mossberg 930 SPX Tactical
Solid pick.

>full straight barrel without shitty differences in diameter on different sections
Based, everything else looks stupid as fuck

Was reading that ?MP15 has chrome lined barrel and AR556 has a Chromolysteel barrel with no lining. Is that going to make any real difference to a novice shooter for first AR?

Yes

>supporting those anti gunners at shit and wesson

How are they antigun?
Seriously unaware here.

Vast majority of people won’t ever shoot out an AR15 barrel.

By the time you have enough rounds to shoot out any barrel, you could’ve bought at least 5 of those rugers.

Well aren't you just the little expert, tkx!

Oh look, another expert!

>muh Hillary hole

If you're going for a budget rifle, go for PSA instead

Was that the gas key user?

Nah, get whichever you can find cheaper. I found a great deal on the ar556 on armslist so thats what I got.

Funny I was just talking to an user about this guy last week, did anyone cap that thread?

Just buy a PSA upper and lower. You'll get a better rifle for less.

those are both good, after getting those two id encourage you to bid on some garbage you can really beat the shit out of so you know how to treat your best stuff right

Id go with a pump like a Mossberg 590A1. Hard to argue with a pump.

Google the pew pew tactical at build guide. I used it for my first AR build, it tells how to do everything, at least for a lower. I would get a complete upper, build your own lower for the first go around, you won't need any special tools or anything. If you can use a screwdriver and/or have every played with Legos, you can build an AR lower. Plus you can get a lower with something personalized or humorous on it, if you like that sort of thing.

I'm interested in getting one too. HD, mag dumps at 20m, and maybe a bit of target shooting at 100m. Don't plan to shoot more than a couple thousand rounds through it.

1) I've seen quite a few time people having some play between the upper/lower of their M&P. Can it cause issues ? Do a bit more expensive ARs have the same issue ?
2) Is the handguard that bad ? I don't expect much from it, it should just be good enough to do 2 or 3 magdumps without burning my hand

Last but not least, this rifle costs 1k€ where I am. There are cheap actual production chinese AKs available to me for 650€. I don't care for the caliber (223 or 7,62) nor the ability to mount optics (I like irons). Since I don't plan to do a lot with the rifle, do you think paying 400€ more to get an AR is really worth it ??
