Do you have any experience with it? I thought about joining something because I am fascinated by chokeholds.

what's a good martial art to learn also how do i go about affording classes as a broke neet

Because I hate getting hurt and feeling pain.

Any one of them that allows for complete sparring. No less than that will do, and is considered a McDojo.

I do, I've done Judo and Karate. If you like choke-holds you could definately have a good time learning them hands-on in Judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, et cetera.

I did do it from ages 6 to 14 but then I found out that I liked drugs and music more.

I am going to start BJJ this summer.
I have been doing Krav Maga for about a year now (inb4 Krav Maga is a meme/MMA is all you need). My Krav Maga teacher is ex -British Army and pretty cool; he made it clear some of the stuff we practise and spar with (like wrist parry) would not work against a serious pro boxer.

I am definitely a lot stronger and fitter. I really want to try BJJ or Muay Thai as well.

The martial arts that work VERY well in MMA are Brazilian-Jiu-Jutsu, Muay Thai, Freestyle wrestling, and boxing.

Old school stuff like Kung fu wing Chun really flopped when UFC started out in the 90s.

Which is the better grappling art: BJJ or wrestling?

I don't have health insurance, if I break some shit I'm fucked

get used to it
better to bleed in practice than in reality

Muay Thai master race here.

I tired it once but everyone hated me and I wasn't strong enough to use moves on people.

Wrestling. Standup. Whoop ass. Takedown. Keep on ground. Whoop ass.
Also judo

I'm very liberal when it comes to martial arts, and while I'll admit I'm not really familiar with military martial arts like Krav Maga I'm not going to denounce it. This isn't about any specific style because the purpose of martial arts is interpreted differently. If you want to try either, then go for it.

I've never judged a martial art based on how well it can compete with others in a sports setting. In fact, I haven't judged martial arts on how well their practitioners go about actual fighting for the reasons above.

For example, as you've referenced Wing Chun, you can see Wing Chun being demonstrated in this video a hell of a long time before the 90s and you can still derive the principles from it, what it means to accomplish. (It's at the beginning of the video)

My point essentially is that the style doesn't matter and neither does the person. A person shouldn't be confining himself to one single style to begin with. Judging based on style and sports ultimately doesn't accomplish much.

That's how a lot of us start out.

Your knees and elbows are amazing.

A better question is, who's the better grappler? Could be either. Could even be a Sumo wrestler. Could be a football linebacker.

krav maga noober goober, started doin it to get out of the house about a month ago

where you located? i wanna try attacking you randomly even though i have no fighting experience

Just learn boxing my dude. all the other martial arts are a meme and you'd get your ass whooped in a real fight with them

come teach me then

If you are serious about martial arts dont fall for a meme one. Boxing, Muay Thai, or kick boxing for striking. Bjj, wrestling, judo for grappling. I would also say judo would be last on that list.

Almost everything else isnt really that good. This includes all karate, krav manga, tea kwodo or any other ones

>guy X is a master of wrestling, he's fantastic at it
>yeah but since guy Y can just sit on him, wrestling is useless
>yeah whatever guy Y does, we should imitate to become better at fighting people
>this is absolutely what martial arts entails, I agree

100 push ups. 100 sit ups. Run 5km every day for a year

Man thats a tough question. I would say bjj but thats only because wrestlers arent looking for armbars and chokes. There gonna take you down and punch you. I would think a bjj guy would be able to catch one before getting too hurt.

A wrestler with a year of bjj tho? Absolute beasts.

Tbf Krav Maga is basically the fundamentals of boxing and wrestling plus some weapon defences with aim of getting out of there.

Obviously in a one on one MMA match those combat sports are better but Krav Maga is useful, especially for knife and baseball bat defences.

The only positive thing about krav is if you have two identical people train krav and pretty much anything else for about 5 months the krav guy most likely will win.

After two years I doubt krav ever wins againts anyone.

I live in the UK and wrestling is nowhere near as big here as it is in the States.
There is an MMA club in my city that teaches BJJ and I melt s purple belt from London who trained BJJ back in the 90s who said it was a legit club.
I think doing Krav Maga has given me some good basics and improved my previously shit physical condition. Now to try some really hard stuff like BJJ and Muay Thai.

Go do it! My first bjj class I didnt expect to dominate or anything but I expected to do pretty good. I was always the best of my friends wrestling growing up and I religiously followed mma. I got stomped by people 50 pounds lighter then me. It took me like three months to even sub someone.

I study with a KMG club (which means the instructors are Israeli certified) and most of the pro krav instructors also have strong training in boxing and BJJ.

Like I said, Krav Maga is not about beating and submitting someone; it is about getting out of there, dealing with weapons, multiple attackers etc...

Ex Navy Seal and BJJ black belt Jock Willink put it best: BJJ wrestling and Boxing are the foundation of a great fighter; Krav Maga is an excellent scheme to augment your already existing combat skills.

BJJ and Muay Thai will definitely beat the ego out of you and you'll come out as a better person.

I started out with boxing when I was 9-13 before stopping for like 6 years. Now I do Muay Thai. Love it so much. I also practice some Catch Wrestling and BJJ though I'm obvious more of a standup fighter.

I could beat up everyone ITT and I haven't even been in a fight since middle school. Bring it on pussies

Where the fuck do you get that wrestlers punch people? Maybe in a street fight or WWE but in high school and college wrestling is all about taking your opponent down and putting him on his back and keeping him there. This includes head locks and arm locks and cradling people up

I think he just meant that in a real street fight a good wrestler would just take you down and start a ground and pound.

How do I get into it if I'm over 25, fat, unfit and sperg?

BJJ for you m8. You do not need to be super strong and the training is not as insanely gruelling as wrestling; it is mostly about technique. Also, BJJ is very effective and the best ground fighting. Also, they do not hand out black belts to 11 year olds or any of that retarded shit they do McDojos.

Hi I do Kung Fu. Kung Fu gets shat on because majority of people are retarded half and think they're learning the wizard chi blasts. The other half thinks they can look EXACTLY like the movies and win a fight. They refuse to transfer the low stancework and flashy big movements into things that are actually practical. Feels bad man.

>video is bruce lee
>chi sau
Bruce lee never even learned the entire wing chun style and the whole style only has 3 forms. Chi sau is a drill for improving certain aspects of your kung fu, and is not really indicative of your overall fighting ability.

You have a point that it isn't exactly fair to judge all arts by how well they compete at sports. Certain arts like bagua and aikido weren't designed for a 1 on 1 ring match, but you should be able to at least seem like you know how to fight and your art isn't completely useless. In Kung Fu that's becoming increasingly rare due to how most Kung Fu practitioners train.

Yeah no shit retard. I meant in a one on one fight. A wrestler is gonna fall back to what hes best at and thats taking you down and controlling you. Since wrestler dont really train chokes I would assume they would just start swinging/ground and pound

But what I mean is they wouldn't even accept me into their dojo or whatever it's called.
And even if they do, they'll bully me really hard, even the teens.
I just can't accept it.

Thank you for the advice though, I'll keep it in mind.

I have serious doubts about anyone who runs drills for knife/gun defense like they seriously think they'll be good enough to not get stabbed or shot. If I taught a Krav Maga class it would be the speak softly and hand over your wallet class.

Maybe some aspects of the style was useless to him, so he ignored it?

A guy at my class, who is pretty strong and tough tbf, got mugged in Spain by some guy with a knife; the guy in my class put the mugger in hospital.

Tbh I think you are overestimating the skill of an average drug addled criminal. My Krav teacher explicitly said that if you encounter someone very skilled with a knife then you are in trouble. However, most criminals are not and will usually try stab you in about 5 or 6 different ways.

Also, all Krav teachers will explain that you expect to get cut when dealing with a knife; the aim is to not get stabbed in the chest or head.

I started doing Judo in December, wanted to learn some self defense before going off to college (about to transfer to 4 year university). I got my yellow belt last month. I've had a ton of fun, and met a lot of cool guys. I even practice on the free open mat days and go out and eat with the guys. So it is really good for making friends.

Judo has chokes in it

if you aren't a total spaz you can find a gym and basically spin a sad tale and if they are nice they might let you mop up and clean the place and you could get a discount or maybe even go for free. Also, I searched around a lot and the cheapest art I was able to find was Judo (Well, there was an aikido place that was five dollars cheaper, but aikido is considered pretty shitty)

I recently began taking Muay Thai and have to say this is happiest i've been in a long while.

>want to learn some martial arts
>look up all the places in the area
>every single one is kids and women only

3rd degree black belt who had been doing Karate for 11 years here.

That is pretty weird desu. Most MMA gyms are massively Male dominated.
