I wasn't pissy at his criticisms it just annoyed me that there was no "what's your plan?" It was just shooting from the hip as soon as he walked in, and most of it was stuff that was done later that week from the plans I had in order anyway so it could have been avoided by a simple question.

He does say often if you want any help just let me know, and part of me wants to get him to help for as you say to just spend time with him, but a big part of me doesn't want him to because he's always quite doubtful of what I can do.

Make a list or whatever of the shit you/he find faulty in the house, and call him up to ask for his help fixing those things (dont accept it if he offers the help, you be the one to ask it).
If he suggest something, and you agree with it, agree.
if he suggest something and you dont agree with it, say exactly why you dont agree, and the conversation flow from there. show him you know your shit, but still have a long way to go (with which the father may help the son grow, see what im gettin at?)
if he doesnt agree with something but you do, do the same as above.
If then it sells well (the house the son built and the father helped with) definitely go out somewhere, take your brother if you get along with him, like a bar or fishing or whatever.
