Has anyone ever in the world ever accidentally dropped a dumbbell/barbell on their face while benching? I feel like it would knock every tooth in your face out and disfigure you for life

Not me, but back in my old high school weight training class we had some lanklet drop just the bar and two 5lb plates straight onto his face. His nose was super bloody, but I don't think it broke.

Dropped a 70kg barbell on my cheekbone once when benching till failure, just got a decent sized cut, nothing seruous

I think a USC football player did a few years ago and ended his athletic career.

I was spotting a guy doing DB presses with 40s(he was new to lifting) and he almost dropped one on his face after failing a rep. Luckily I was there to catch it.

I've done it with 2 plates. I thought it was secure and missed the rack and dropped it. My reflexes kicked in right before it was about to hit but I'd still say 60% of the weight hit my nose.

Obviously broke my nose but didn't suffer a concussion somehow.

Not even kidding when benching 185lb once I fucked up reracking the weight and the bar came straight down on my head. Luckily I have a cromagnon shaped skull so the bar just kinda slid, no injuries and I continued lifting. However, it took half of my left eyebrow clean off from the friction.

I will never use a barbell for this reason.

why do people do suicide grip?

im sorry. after googling what a cromagnon is i realized im wrong. I meant neanderthalic

Every time I bench I grip that bar like my life depends on it. Which it doesn't now because it's 110lb, I just started, but it will. It gets that grip strength up, and you can lift more the harder you grip.

Idk but it's my greatest fear while lifting. It's why I don't even get close to failure at high weight.

thats why i don't bench with clips that hold the weight on the bar
if i start to fail and i can't rerack (has yet to happen in the several years i've been lifting heavy) i know i can push the bar to one side and let the weights fall off

I did drop the barbel on my face during one of my first times. Wasn’t benching for months after it. It wasn’t super painful, but dropped my morale for sure

The bench at my gym has pins for hanging small plates almost directly above the bar and back a bit, there was a barbell clip hanging from there once and when I re-racked the bar, I pushed the bar too hard and the clip fell and hit my face. Now I always make sure it's empty or I could have a a pretty bad accident. Terrible design if you ask me

>not benching in the squat rack with the safeties up

its like you guys want to die after you break 2pl8

use safety pins but you need to make sure your bench set up allows you to be behind the uprights, so that no matter what the barbell can never come down on your throat/face area.
the problem is a lot of gyms have benches where the uprights are directly in line with your face

this isn't feasible with heavier weights. surefire way to break a pec.
always use the safeties

What are the safety pins on the rack right below the main ones for ? An easier way to safety rack if you can't get it all the way up.

thank you user that was a good laugh

In weightlifting class in high school once kids were taking the 45s off of one side all at once and it cause the other side to fly and send a 45 flying in the air. It flew a good 6 feet. Thankfully no one was in the way. The teacher was pissed.

Anyone else start doing Dumbbell press so you can go to failure without a spotter?
