Ask a professional firefighter anything

Ask a professional firefighter anything.

Casual thread. Sip some beer with my Jow Forums my first one in a month.

I don't think I'm ready for professional fire fighting, is there an amateur league I can get started in?

Did you watch Only The Brave?

I live in a small town with a volunteer fire department. How hard is it to get on board?

you can volunteer usually if you live in a rural area, I did that for 4 years before I became paid.

I think I saw about 20 minutes of it. I don't like TV or movies about that stuff because the inaccuracies annoy me so bad. Chicago Fire is a joke.

im planning on becoming one. perfect thread.

1. how strong do i have to be? half way to 1234?

2. whats the most fucked up thing youve seen/done on the job.

3. would you recommend it? tips on how to get hired maybe?

4. hows the pay

5. whats an average day on the job like

6. how much do you bench brah

its about as competitive as being a cop but there are much fewer FF than Cop because so many places are volunteer only. you have to score high and interview better than a lot of other people.

What kind of food do you make at the firehouse? What's good for your following working out with equipment?

Im testing out for my EMT-B next month
Are you cross trained as a medic? I hear fire medics get good pay

1. you have to pass a nation CPAT test which I will talk about later. You can youtube the test.

2. Ive had people die on me, held brains in my hands. pulled the dead out of vehicles.

3.its the best job in the world !

4. the pay varies a lot. I would compare it to an EMT in your area.

5. I will cover that in a post in a minute after the CPAT one.

6. my best max was 275. I am 170lbs

our Lieutenant cooks home cooked meals for us, last shift we had pork chops with Italian 'taters and shells n cheese.

in the big cities they train you EMT-B when you are in boot camp. At my small town dept we are not required to be EMT unless ranked Captain or above. I did the EMT class for fun and take my NREMT at the end of this month

Good luck on the test my man

I guess I can start with the CPAT. That's the national agility test for firefighters. It was made, more or less, to mitigate the good ole boy system and keep a mayor from giving his dead beat sons or friends jobs.

Everyone after 2008 (I think) who is a paid firefighter has to pass this test. It represent a minimum of physical abilities for a structure fire.

The hardest part is the first part, they put you in a 75lb vest and you half to walk on a stair stepper for 3 minutes at 60spm. Then you drop down to a 50lbs vest and run a gauntlet of BS, one of the harder things being a 165lbs dummy drag. Its not hard by any means when compared to Navy Seals and stuff but the average person cant do the 1st stage.

Once you have a valid CPAT card you can apply. You only need to do it once but the card is valid for a year.

I would compare it to being as hard and exhausting as running a 6:30 time mile.

Average Day on the Job.

I feel like we average 1 - 2 calls a day. Some days we have no calls, others we can have 4 - 5.

first thing we do is check our trucks off in the morning, make sure everything is in order. The we eat breakfast if we didn't before shift start. I am the Public Information Officer so I have side work I do. A lot of TV watching, video games. Just keeping busy waiting on calls. We do school cross walks, wash the trucks, install car seats, various things. If its a sunday, forget it I am laying in bed for 3 hours after I check those trucks off. That being said we do love days where we run back to back calls. Most calls are medical related and car wrecks. FEW actual fire. lots of false alarms. we do 100 hours of training a year. Some of us go to regional fire schools for that, I did arson investigation one year, did Hazmat a year before that. The other aspects of firefighter is things like trench and confined space rescue. Iam doing rope rescue this year.

How do I make a torch?

slow burning oil.

Ever put out a tire fire? A large pile of tires?

no. But I know that anything close to it will get nasty tire gunk on it.

have you considered crosstraining to debut in MMA?

t. black belt in firefighting

Jow Forums - fitness

Good night

I got my yellow belt in Tae Kwon Do. It was fun, have considered going back and doing something else and doing it long term but there is also a risk of being injured and screwing my career up.

I have lots of acquaintances but no close friends that I hang out with. The last time I got invited out somewhere by my "friends" was the Mayweather vs McGregor fight. I've tried to make plans with people almost every weekend since then but they always have something else going on so I've spent every day alone. What am I doing wrong? How do normal people make friends and what do you guys do with your friends?

I find value in solitude. Being alone is peaceful for me. But I know what you mean.

you usually find friends from Work and School. Outside of that you wont find many friends.

All my friends are basically work related.I have a ton of friends from back in the day when we all went to local music shows. Neighbors are good too.

Can I be a firefighter if I don't want to risk my life at all?

Faggggg

Attached: IMG_8664.jpg (250x333, 47K)

Not OP but fuck you. People have no place in helping others

yeah solitude is nice and all but the last time I left my apartment for reasons other than work, groceries, or the gym was 224 fucking days ago. The people at work all used to invite me out to stuff but, like always, they stopped and must have given up on me. My neighbors in the other apartments do nothing but fight and they scream so fucking loud that I know the names of everyone in the building even though I've never talked to them. My old ring of friends all stay in contact by playing online video games with each other but I swore video games off because I was becoming addicted, so they have all forgotten about me.

What's the best style to take on a fire? I hear you guys wrestle a lot. Greco-Roman?

>Ask a professional firefighter anything.

literally no one cares. fucking boot.

how does it feel knowing the majority of calls you respond to are for EMT manpower assistance?

how does it feel to be an actual hero that deserves more recognition than pussy ass police officers, but not getting the recognition that police officers get?

But some how EMTs make a forth of what a firefighter makes

Did anyone hear take the NYC FDNY Open competitive

Is this shit actually able to save anyone from the fire?

Attached: shltf.jpg (600x475, 148K)

What's it like to sit on your ass for 23.5/24 hours a shift while getting paid for the privilege and having normies suck your sweaty cock for being such a hero? asking for a friend

So is it true you lower the bar for women joining?

based

>ph*neposting

more like cook your inside well done

Not OP but I am in a fire academy. When they taught us wildland fire one night they pretty much told us that they don't work. They mostly carry them to have peace of mind and MAYBE... MAYBE survive but that is a SLIM chance. If you have to deploy one of these chances are you are going to die and they know it.

What percentage of your station is using steroids? I know they're popular with cops and prison guards so I imagine firefighters probably have a decent number of roiders amongst them

Reminds me of that video of the 12 IIRC bolivian firefighters getting rosted alive in these things. The SCREAMS were terrible

Have you seen the movie Backdraft and if so what did you think of it?

Have you ever started any of the fires yourself?

If the answer is "no" you should consider it, it's pretty fun from personal experience!

1. Is Fireproof the single greatest movie about firefighting?

2. Jow Forums related: what do your fitness regimens look like? I've always wondered. Unlike cops, every fireman I've ever met was built like a linebacker. Do you guys just kill time between calls in the gyms in the firehouse or what?

Sounds almost like the NAAC kits they gave us in the Army.
> Atropine will save you if you get gassed.
Okay bud. Or better yet, the protocols for if you see a nuke detonate.
> Face away from the light, lay down with your toes pointing outwards so the soles of your boots deflect the blast around and over your torso.
Right. Like combat boots are tougher than a 150,000,000 degree blast wave.

I got "drafted" as a firefighter for the national employment service.
2 years full time now. How do you pass the time on your shifts? Sitting around and playing poker with the guys is getting boring and daytime TV sucks.
