>Why start learning? Defend yourself without going to court for a manslaughter charge. It's fun as fuck, and a way to entertain yourself without vidya. It's non-boring cardio.
>What start learning? If you're interested in striking arts, try boxing, or Muay Thai if you're less interested in mobility, head movement, but more interested in learning elbows, knees, and kicks.
>But grappling? BJJ schools are the easiest to come by, but wrestling is going to give you the most control on the ground, while also letting you decide to stay standing if you don't want to be taken down.

Be wary of pseudoscience regarding martial arts (not just trad martial art kata faggotry). While routines with high-volume pull ups and dips have their uses, even Western boxers are notorious for things like chugging their own piss.
Thoughts on Judo? There’s a judo/weightlifting school by my university that I’m going to next year. The owner of the gym competed in the olympics and coached Olympians in Judo
Blake Young
Highly recommend it. Judo and wrestling are the combat sports you want to do while you are young. Tap early, tap often, learn how to break fall. If your body just can't handle as you drift into your late 20's its an easy transition to jits
"Friday's release was the first ever signature shoe released by Nike for an MMA athlete in the United States. Other fighters have had Nike shoes made in their name but only in overseas markets like Japan.
Jones' shoe was released via Nike.com as well as NikeTown stores in New York and Las Vegas in limited numbers.
A representative from NikeTown in New York City speaking to Bleacher Report on Saturday said that their stock of Jones' first shoe was nearly sold out in 24 hours. A few sizes remain, but the majority of the shoes have already been sold in the store."
He claims it was dick pills. Apparently he needs them to get hard because "it's just too big".
One guy actually believes him and happens to be popular enough to keep jones' credibility intact. That one guy is a 5'4" midget with a bbc obsession. Fuck that guy.
Jones acting like a batshit manchild isn't btfo'ing anyone but himself.
Nathaniel Taylor
I went to a bjj class today. It was not as gay as I tought it would be. I was mostly trying to apply the knowledge i got from heem and got my ass handed to me. Next month I'll definitelly take a break from boxing and dedicate myself to learn bjj. There were also barefoot qt grills and I didn't sperg out. It was a good day.
BJJ is fantastic cardio for the first couple of months. Once you learn to minimize effort and maximize effect, then it becomes much easier on the body. I lost 15lbs the first month of bjj, along with a cut. Most of the dudes at my gym are carved out of wood, except for the 260lb monstrosity that always pancakes on top and just lays on your chest till you tap.
Find a bjj gym with a casual atmosphere. Most of the dudes that train there will probably have done wrestling, muay thai and other MMA shit. A lot off them are willing to incorporate other martial arts into the training if you stick around long enough.
>resorting to murder over disputes You gun nuts are pussies. Sure, pull one out against another dude with a gun or a group of people. One on one though, have some balls
Lol I bet it was a single size run for the stores so they could claim it was sold out.
Aiden Moore
Self defense isn't a pissing contest. I'm not going to risk my wellbeing by getting into a street fight. A gun is the best option. >resorting to murder What? You're the first person to mention murder. You sound like a thug.
Thomas Rogers
Nah because then I'd be a willing participant, I'd just continue to back up and call the cops. If he started throwing fists and connecting while I was backing up I'd mag dump him and say I feared for my life and was backing away constantly.
Keep your dumb shit fantasy crap where you think you can just go around fighting people in yoru head
Adam Sanders
>you are supposed to restrain him He’d be alot easier to restrain if he has a bullet in his leg. Have fun with your ebin BJJ chokes when the dude bites a chunk out of your arm or stabs you in the dick with his pocket knife.
UFC back when it was a discipline vs discipline tornament. BJJ beat boxing wrestling and all others. Yet you retards constantly talk shit.

Because when someone does something outside of lifting and enjoys it they get upset. Especially when its fighting because they'd get their ass kicked despite their heavy lifts.

Judo is beast. As a bouncer, it has been a life saver. People don't fight well if you smash them into the pavement.
Robert Morgan
>we’ll never get in a fight because you won’t start one and I’m scared I’ll get shot, but if we did, I’d kick your pussy ass
Ryan Rodriguez
Because they need to fuck off to /sp/ or whatever shithole they came from. Jow Forums has and always will be the board about weightlifting. Nobody gives a fuck about your gay ass karate.
Nathan Thomas
>they get upset if you talk about anything other than lifting Or the fact that idiots in these threads talking about mma think they are tough shit trying to start imaginary fights on the street and think they'd have no repercussion.
Hunter Jones
Point proven. Go cry more in your feels threads guys while your also complain about women.
They'll take you through some basics, but my experience is that you'll learn with everyone else. Bjj is endless; there isn't really a starting and stopping point. There's some stuff you need to know to survive, but you're pretty much just gonna get chucked in the deep end. You will get bent, choked, twisted and suffocated so many times. Learn to enjoy it. Once you acquire some technique, you'll start to survive, then after a while you'll start to win. And that is an amazing feeling after getting your face smashed for weeks. Another thing; if the dudes mercilessly smash you and injure you for fun, it's probably a gym full of dicks and you should find somewhere else to train.
I'm just gonna throw this out there and say boxing with kick defense is superior to muay thai. >inb4 thats kick boxing
Tyler Collins
>Defend yourself >with a "combat sport" That's a fool's gamble. You're a teenager who has watched Never Back Down too many times. You think "combat sports" will get you in Amber Heard's pants. You're gonna get hurt trying this shit in the real world looking for a fight. Open carry, virgin.
>Another thing; if the dudes mercilessly smash you and injure you for fun, it's probably a gym full of dicks and you should find somewhere else to train. That happened to me when I was 16. MMA gym. Was a DYEL back then only did bicep curls. So I was the weakest guy there. Was there for a couple months. They were all full grown men with badass physiques. It was a bad place. They'd make you box full-on without teaching you any basics. I got bloodied and they laughed about it. Put me off martial arts. This time if I join a place I will make sure it's just grappling. I don't want to get pounded like a piece of raw meat. BJJ seems like it could be tolerable.
I'm looking at a local place's schedule. The class is supposed to be pure BJJ. 2 days gi and 2 days no-gi. What's weird is it says Friday is no-gi and MMA even though it's not supposed to be a fuckin' MMA class. Do you think that means if I went on Fridays I'd have to do MMA too because I am solely interested in grappling. Fuck getting punched and kicked!
I don't even know these two, but seems like jones is/was a way more successful fighter than the other guy who literally didn't win anything. So jones seems to BTFO him quite hard my dude

You will die after you try to pull your gun out at close range but have no close quarters combat knowledge so you get disarmed.

A lot of people lift out of insecurity because they were small and weak in school so they were picked on and beaten up. They still have a cowardly mindset and are terrified of a fight though.
Matthew Cox
>UFC back when it was a discipline vs discipline tornament. BJJ beat boxing wrestling and all others. Yet you retards constantly talk shit. How young are you? The first UFCs were a commercial show for BJJ, nothing more, nothing less. They cherry-picked their opponents and did all kinds of fucking shady stuff in the background. It was basically all manipulated and fucking hell, you should know this.
>So jones seems to BTFO him quite hard my dude You either have serious mental problems or you grew up in a broken home.
Colton Allen
Post your body, tough guy.
Lincoln Brooks
>BJJ beat boxing wrestling and all others. If the promoter's brother had been a boxer instead of a BJJ guy, do you think maybe he could have found some tomato cans from other disciplines for his brother to crush? I certainly do.
>The first UFCs were a commercial show for BJJ, nothing more, nothing less. They cherry-picked their opponents and did all kinds of fucking shady stuff in the background. This. A thousand times over, this. If Yoshida had been invited to UFC 1, he would have put Royce to sleep via collar choke like he did when they finally did fight in Pride years later. Rorion wasn't about to let that happen to Royce, not when he was in a position to get everyone to drink the Gracie Kool Aid. Hell, look at Royce's round one opponent from that tournament: an over the hill boxer with one fucking glove on.
The fights in the early UFCs were real but everything was set up to favor Royce. The funny thing is that years later, seemingly intelligent people like Joe Rogan still say stuff like "BJJ is the best style because Royce beat a bunch of people in the early UFCs (people we've never heard of who were hand picked by the promoter, his brother Rorion)."
Rolled with a brown belt "monstrosity" He just layed on top of me and i swear i couldn't move even my fingers but it was fucking beautiful

Do many people do martial arts as a fun healthy hobby or are they mostly psychotic edgelords that just wanna be Tyler Durdan?
Robert Perry
>If Yoshida had been invited to UFC 1 If he was invited, then they'd have Rickson fight instead of Royce
Connor Parker
>Joe Rogan still say stuff like "BJJ is the best style because Royce beat a bunch of people in the early UFCs Modern MMA coaches even say this. Firas Zahabi comes to mind
You wake up in the hospital because you’re dyel form allows one good swing before being overpowered and have the bat used against you. Seen it happen with knives too.
Nicholas Perry
no.
MT, as in actual muay thai, not "kickboxing", is an almost complete discipline. It involves all the limbs, and has both striking and grappling from the standing position.
K1 neutered its ruleset thanks to the effectiveness of clinch work from guys like buakaw.
"boxing with kick defense" is just a neutered form of kickboxing.
> inb4 hurr durr moo tai doesnt have good boxing
the boxing ability varies from gym to gym and from fighter to fighter, just as there a multitude of variations and opinions on how to do things in western boxing, so is there in Muay Thai.
It is worth noting however, that thailand has the prestige of having quite a few notable MT fighters transition into boxing and win at the olympics and/or have stellar professional careers. On the other hand, you would struggle to name a single western boxer who has transitioned to kickboxing or MT with success.
to be fair, there is more money in boxing than there is in MT, so that may be a reason but the point stands that the idea that thais can't box is demonstrably false. Pic very much related
BJJ is crucial component of MMA today. It is arguably the MOST crucial component.
You can survive and even be competitive at the elite level with relatively poor striking, this is evidenced by fighters in contention today who have awful striking. You CANNOT survive in todays MMA world with poor grappling. Even the guys accused of having a so-so ground game actually have very good ground games, such as Mcgregor, further backed up by legit BJJ coaches saying he has that skillset.
I come from a boxing background, a better part of 10 years, including wins at GG, state and national. The people i typically find underestimating or talking shit about BJJ are the guys who have never rolled even once. The gap between someone who has no grappling experience and even a novice grappler is absolutely gargantuan. It cannot be overstated.
Everyone in MMA works extensively on BJJ. Everyone. The days of wrestlers just doing their thing and not listening to anyone else are absolutely over and done with. Even the so called "wrestlers" are often blue or purple belts in BJJ.
Matthew Cooper
>Have fun with your ebin BJJ chokes when the dude bites a chunk out of your arm or stabs you in the dick with his pocket knife.
fucking retard, what do you think happens when you bite someone who has you in a CHOKE
spoilers: he crushes your fucking windpipe and you'll be lucky if you dont also choke to death on your own blood from the overpressure

>BJJ is crucial component of MMA today No one said that it wasn't. I didn't anyway (me being )
>You CANNOT survive in todays MMA world with poor grappling I didn't say that you could, and this doesn't invalidate my earlier point that Rorion is Royce's brother and it advantaged Royce tremendously to have Rorion as the matchmaker. Could a boxing promoter have contrived a scenario where a boxer flew through inferior competition? Absolutely.
>The people i typically find underestimating or talking shit about BJJ are the guys who have never rolled even once. The gap between someone who has no grappling experience and even a novice grappler is absolutely gargantuan. Again, who the fuck is talking shit about BJJ? No one said it is useless. What I have said is that people see it as the unstoppable, unbeatable martial art to trump all others. It's not. Again, using Royce as the archetypal example, Royce got absolutely rekt by Yoshida, Sakuraba and Hughes.
BJJ is an effective grappling art. It is not the only effective grappling art.

How were everybody's weekend open mats, brehs?
I have about nine months of training total but I've started being able to control blue belts consistently, and even tap them a few times in sparring.
Got an old injury which usually lays dormant, but as soon as I'm put in a round back position it gets re-injured and puts me out for training for a few days and is pretty debilitating. Lifting is fine since I can control what positions my back ends up in, but when wrestling I get the same injury all the time. Any tips on how I might rehab this considering it's not a consistent injury and only gets re-injured during martial arts and other sports.
Cooper Jackson
That fight is the one and only time Werdum has looked lost on the feet. His kickboxing is usually stellar.
Josiah Murphy
Do you ever go out with the boys? Do you even have boys? Confrontation is not uncommon when you're Jow Forums and people at bars or clubs act aggressively towards you. Are you even Jow Forums?
Parker Rivera
Do both honestly.

When and how long am I supposed to do the BFS dot drill? Before a run? Training? Everyday, or skip? Thanks!
