Barbell vs Dumbell bench press
Will I still be able to progress and lift heavier with Dumbell press? I have no barbell rack at home so I’ve only been doing the Dumbell press

I just do dumbells because im terrified of getting my chest caved in with the barbell
Wanna know how I know you are a dyel?
I do both.
My bench is at 335 lbs.
I use 90 lb. dumbbells for incline bench and seated shoulder press.
>can dumbbell press 50lb on each hand but barely 1pl8 on bp
am i gonna make it?
Never said i was fit my guy
Yes to an extent but once you get like 2 pl8 bench have fun carrying/setting up 110 pound dumbells
whats a dyel?
Barbells aren’t scary if you know how to correctly grip the bar. You should be gripping by the web of your fingers not the fingers itself or it’ll slip out.
Lol wut I rep 80s and my bench is nowhere near 335
Of course you'll make progress. I also work out at home alone, so I prefer the dumbbell press because I feel it's safer. I can always just drop the weights; if I'm alone and I drop a barbell on my neck I'm fucked. I haven't had an accident yet, but I like to be extra careful.
Mine only go up to 90
I do inclined with dumbells and flat with bar. Am i doing it right, Jow Forums?
Simple answer is it depends on your goals. Looking for better chest development to look good? Dumbbells. Looking to be a powerlifter or train for strength? Barbell.
Dumbbells allow for a greater weighted stretch of the pecs at the bottom via the increased ROM. You can get better chest development by isolating it more. You won't lift as much weight but you don't need to. If you use a barbell, you can utilize leg drive and a large arch using a barbell much more effectively than with dumbbells. You'll train more specifically for general strength and powerlifting.
That said, you don't have to choose. Just do both.
Oh okay
If you're a lanklet you should do dumbell bench press no contest imo. Do flat to burn out if you want but focus on dumbell more
I have been lifting for 7 years.
For my first 4 years lifting I exclusively did DB chest presses (mostly Incline)
It got to a point where the DB's became so big that it was difficult to press them properly, and moving 60kg+ dumbells into position is always risky.
For the past 3 years I've exclusively been Flat Barbell Bench Pressing, no DB pressing at all. My chest is the best it has ever been, haven't lost any upper-chest size despite not having Incline Benched in years.
That said, it is my experience that DB Incline pressing for aesthetics is a meme.
i only do dumbbels because i dont want to ask some guy to spot me like an autist
everyone benches more an barbell than dumbell you idiot, you will never make it
what were you benching at the start of that 3 year period? what are you benching now?
Neither.
Don't care for functional strength, I just want the volume in mah pecs. Dumbell flies and variations, and cable flies and variations. I do incline barbell once a month with like lol 1pl8 for reps, just so I don't forget how to do it.
Wanna know how I know you are a dyel?
Its not the grip that scares me its just that i cant bail out of it easily
To exact heres my history.
>First 6 months - Barbell Bench 5x5 to a 110kg.
>Started reading on the bb.com misc
>All the bro's saying just do Incline DB's and Dips for MUH AESTHETICS BRAH BROH BREH
>Stop flat BBing and switch to DB Incline Press and Dips.
>Get good results
>Start getting annoyed at the fact the Dumbbells were getting too big and I began to feel worried everytime I'd get them into position
>Few years pass
>See on Youtube a powerlifter with an AMAZING chest who only does Flat Bench and Weighted Dips & OHP as an accessory to his Bench.
>Decide to try Flat Bench again, was already doing Weighted Dips / OHP anyway.
>Doesn't take too long to relearn the Flat Bench again
>Can now rep 140kg+
>Best my entire chest/triceps have ever looked.
My progress has been very slow though, 7 years. Had to gain probably 15kg of body-weight 80kg-95kg to make that transition from low 100kgs bench to 140kgs+
I rep 105lbs on dumbells and I don't ever bench. I highly doubt I could get anywhere near 335.
>he feels safer doing dumbbell presses
Literally what?
I felt like I was going to get killed everytime I DB pressed above 100lbs dumbbells.
But I feel 100% safe Barbell Pressing in a power-rack with the safety bars there.
Look in the mirror
Perche no los dos
It wont directly carry over instantly.
But if you can DB press 100lbs+ dumbells for reps, if you start doing BB press, you can learn the motorpatterns for a week or two, then once you have the motorpattern down, you'll be able to slap on 250 or so and rep it out
The ratio doesn't work like that for dumbbell to barbell. Take the dumbbell weight and divide it by 3.5 - 4.0 to find out your barbell weight or what should be your barbell weight. To go from barbell to dumbbell multiply by 3.5-4
Do you know what even is a dumbbell
I've found dumbbell to be far more effective. I can barely feel barbel bench hitting my chest.
>I felt like I was going to get killed everytime I DB pressed above 100lbs dumbbells.
That's why you get a competent spotter to hold your tris/elbows.
Roasted
>not doing barbell flies
never gonna make it
Have you tried putting weight on the barbell?
I had the same thing bro.
What made me really feel the inner chest was taking off half the weight and putting my arms essentially parallel to the torso. That last 1/3 of the movement my tiddies were burning after 20+ reps. When I do my regular weight with good flared out elbows form my anterior deltoids are doing all the lifting.
You're now imagining dropping a dumbbell on your chest
Ditch flat bench and do everything incline. Do barbell bench first heavy, then an isolation movement like flys, then dumbbells.
You’re not gonna make gains like that boi
These aren’t too good for your shoulders, from what I hear
Lightweight baby here, when you're done with DB presses, what do you do with the weights? Drop them or sit back up with them? Either way seems awkward, and ever since I forgot to tip the weight valet he doesn't come around to spot me anymore.
My bench sucks dick mates. I'm about 79kg, former 100kg fatty about 9 months into losing weight and making moderate strength gains during. I think I have reached peak noob gains. Do I just need to cut hard as fuck and start recomp if I want more strength at this point? I'm pretty weak for a non skelly.
If you're going to use a barbell set up the pins in a power rack
The main issue with barbell is the greater chance of fucking up your back/shoulders
Your arms are supposed to be mostly vertical and you tuck your elbows to your sides a little when your go down, like 45-60 degrees from your sides
Open up your elbows and push them down to the floor
Let go a second before they hit to stop the bounce fucking up your wrists
When I started lifting a couple years ago I decided to start with DB benching until there weren't heavy enough DBs. I'm now at the last DB weight (95lbs) and got the fifth rep for the first time yesterday. going to work it up to eight reps, then it's BB bench for me. I assume I should start defensively at like 1,5pl8 or something
just learn to fail faggot. do the roll of shame or don't clip the weight and simply let it fall if you can't lift it back up
That's because the barbell bench lacks abduction which is the main purpose of the pecs.
Dumbells
>safer
>better chest activation
>can use do with no spotter
dumbbell is definitely more chad
There’s no reason to limit your options. You can get a chest pump very easily with a barbell if you grip it right. So yeah, you fell for a meme.
Dumbbells are slightly better if you’re rich or go to a gym that has a shit ton of different weighted dumbbells if not barbell is way better since you can use linear progression with bench press
Dumbbells may be better for the stretch, but you can only take it so far before you lose on that benefit.
Its the same thing with Dumbbell Stiff-Leg Deadlifts. You can get a better stretch on the hamstrings that way, but you're going to be severely limited by the weight you can use when compared to a barbell. It gets to the point where the advantage of the stretch on the dumbbell becomes nullified by the pure flat out increased weight you can move with a barbell.
getting the dumbells up off the ground is harder than doing a bench press with them
Stability is less for DB than BB eh. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. This is a great and correct image you have posted here, OP
Think you have that backwards, chief
I think you may have read the image incorrectly.
i DB press 40kg, so i should be able to bench over 3pl8? wut?
Read it literally exactly as it is written.
It should be fine using one dumbbell and switch arms after reps, right?
Why do people lift weights to be "aesthetic" when they can just do grappling or any other sport where strength is a factor, stay at a low bodyfat percentage, and look as good to normies/girls as if they were doing this castrated bodybuilding where they don't chase numbers on the big lifts? Serious question. I lift to be a tank, but twinks at my judo gym look shredded as fuck just from judo.
do both you nigger
instagram.com
Youre welcome OP
barbell bench is way more stable fuck you
Why would I want to do both when I can do my heavy bench press and then superset flys and jm presses/pushdowns?
You already built your chest doing DB press you brainlet. I can maintain leg size switching to leg press even though I built my legs doing squats.
Lol I can only bench 145 with barbell but 65 with dumbells. I think a better way is to take the total weight of the dumbells and add 45 lbs.
Dumbell masterrace here
for strength?
only dyels are going to say dumbbell. You can say whatever you want, the simple fact is that you're only going to get an overload with barbells. I bench 270, if you think its convenient for me to db press with 135s, you're retarded; i'd have to drop the weight. If I drop the weight, im not overloading my chest and just lifting for a pump
for hypertrophy? Get a 225 bench for reps then you can start memeing around with the 80-100 lb dbs
>spotting
What bruv u ain’t got a death wish? Fucking pussy
I used to do dumbbells but when my bench got to 40 kg the dumbbells got too heavy to move around, and hard to stabilize especially on the last few sets.
Barbell makes the whole experience smoother.
I still do OHP with dumbbells, but soon I'll move to using a barbell too (and doing it in the squat rack).
that frog croak at the end
It means someone who needs to lurk moar
It's an acronym for describing a certain type of person:
D-needs
Y-to
E-lurk
L-more
>he doesn't do everything with dumbbells
do you even kroc row
t.brainlet
I use dumbbells, while I could do barbell I'm weaker so using a 25 in each hand is where I'm at and I'll keep moving up until using a barbell for more weight is required. I'm not trying to chase weight so IDC, as long as I make steady gains.
>>First 6 months - Barbell Bench 5x5 to a 110kg.
no you didn't
