The answer: He stays very very lean year round, single digit bodyfat, and he is able to hold onto his muscle mass and strength without seeing it go down, he is also able to function not only physically, but mentally as well.
Staying at that low level of bodyfat naturally is just not possible for extended periods of time.
At that level of body-fat as a natural, your testosterone crashes hard, and eventually you begin to wither away muscle and strength, the fact he is able to withstand this basic natural function/reaction of being lean means he has artificial hormones running the testosterone in his body.

This explains a lot. I’ve been at 5-6% since last summer and I’ve been lifting 4-5 days a week but I’ve lost about 4 pounds of muscle in this time frame. When I eat more, my bf goes up, and when I eat less, my muscle goes away. It’s easier to maintain at higher bf%, anecdotally.

Yep. This is why testosterone is so important. Natural testosterone production is horrible at low bodyfat levels, and thus your nutrient partitioning becomes shit, as you experience now with muscle coming off easy and fat gaining easy while at that low bodyfat percentage.
10-15% bodyfat is going to be the best place for a natural lifter to be. Gaining phase maxed out at 15%, cutting phase maxed out at 10%. Staying within that range is most optimal for strength, size, and overall health.

Except that he has extensive nutritional knowledge and is very strict and repetitive about his diet (i.e. he always eats the same things in the same proportions). It's ridiculous that a high level fitness expert, with a good credentials, is getting called out by some nobodies on some anime image board. You guys are the real pros, no doubt.

The way this argument goes, is just like if the OP had asked if you could gain muscle while cutting and have someone write "first law of thermodynamics brah, you can't" or "maybe if you're making noobgains, it's impossible otherwise".
