depends on your size. I use wired earbuds, and keep my iPhone 6+ in the pocket of my shorts. I pull it out between sets to record weight and reps. No problem.
Pockets are actually a requirement for me when shopping for gym shorts because of this. On exercises where it would restrict movement, I balance it on the machine, or just remove it completely. I can go without tunes for a few minutes. Might switch to bluetooth earbuds soon to ease that.
