I pulled the bar as high as Lu in the OP (if not higher) but still can't snatch it, I think my catch is too soft. I'm also shit at snatch balance and OHS - these are probably related

Just curious why are you guys into Oly lifting? I never see Oly lifts on strength and muscle building programs. I know those lifts are similar movements to squats, deadlifts, overhead press, and power cleans and that they're good for you.
I just don't see as much of a purpose for them besides for fun if you're focused on your physique as the reason you lift. Crossfitters love them, but that's not really a good reason to do them. I understand doing them as a sport being fun, but why else do you guys do it?
Cameron Jones
for me it's just fun, no other reason got into lifting as post-surgical rehab, then regular gym stuff got boring, then powerlifting got boring, then bodybuilding got boring
the skill threshold for wl is high enough that my motivation to not be shit outweighs any potential boredom

Should knee sleeves be worn? especially for someone that squats 3x a week?
Reason i haven't bought a pair yet, is because i'm worried it will weaken my knees, and quads.
Michael Gutierrez
Reminder panda pulls are stupid and pointless
Justin Rivera
in my experience there's not much of a performance effect and it comes down mostly to personal preference. Can't say I've noticed much of a difference either way except that I somehow felt more confident with sleeves (but conversely less confident if I didn't have them). It won't weaken you
so is having a

Is it not enough for it to be a sport?
Competing in sports is fun and this is a sport I am interested in, what more do you want??

Interesting, what do you say though? buy them? i am 24 and do want to take care of my knees the best i can which is another reason i am swaying towards buying a pair. I also lift in my garage which can get very cold at times, especially squatting 145kg at 5c.
Daniel Ramirez
>do 60% backsquats 2x10 on saturday beltless and sleeveless >knees are VERY poppy and crunchy
Help
David Campbell
maybe try ordering a pair on amazon first, I got a pair for $6 that were exactly the same as the hookgrip ones, but unbranded
some relevant information I guess is that I had major knee surgery 8 years ago and knees are quite often painful if I don't maintain them
Kayden Turner
I know plenty of people who dont use sleeves
They will keep your joints warm and cozy however so if you want them get them, I wouldn’t call them necessary though but they can help.
Nathan Brown
>>knees are VERY poppy and crunchy
That's normal, even people like clarence knees crackly and pop
Fuck it.. might buy it now. And use it for only when it's cold to look after my joints.
Adam Morris
I was really just complaining cause I know thats normal but still
Ouch mine knees
They pop so hard it hurts a bit lol, doesnt do this with sleeves though so I have no idea
Ian Martin
I only use sleeves for back and front squats mostly cause I have SBD’s and I could not snatch in them, I *probably* could clean and jerk in them but there is no need
Might eventually get a thin pair for snatch and clean and jerk if I feel like I need it
Jack Martin
I want them for back-squats only, and SBD are what i will get. Fucking pricey cunts though..
Joshua Williams
They’re very nice sleeves
They’re kindof cheating though I bet it adds atleast 10lbs to my squat by how rigid they are
Connor Moore
anyone got some basic learning vid for the pulls? I've started back dynamic lifts after doing some regular lifting for a while and I can't manage to get the cues to get the form right I'm hang cleaning my bw for a few repsbut the form is completely wrong, and I know that if I continue like that I'll end up hitting a wall in 10kg or so
Xavier Butler
It's over for me and my elbow Please carry on my lifts with you
>if you're focused on your physique as the reason you lift.
You'll get sick traps, forearms, quads, glutes, hamstrings, delts and lats actually.
Ethan Watson
what happened?

remember, you're talking to the asshole who calls clean grip ohs a meme but who doesn't have the shoulder flexibility to power jerk properly. iow a poser who knows little about the sport and doesn't even work on his own weaknesses or know how to, but who still is narcissistic enough to namefag on the /owg/.
>I never see Oly lifts on strength and muscle building programs that's because you haven't been around much and most programs on the net are shit. ss uses the ol. so do most of his texas method versions and many of his h-l-m starr model strength programs. usually just power clean and power snatch, and both have technique instructions in the ss book. bfs biggerfasterstronger the most popular athletic program in american high schools uses the clean as a main lift and promotes the snatch and jerk as aux lifts. on and off they've sponsored a weightlifting team and many people in the sport of owg got their start on bfs, sean waxman is one. all of the boyd epley inspired programs use the lifts. husker power does mostly cleans and rack jerks btn but it does them every single workout, right up front. lsu and alabama football team programs use the olympics pretty heavily. i haven't traced their program's lineages to see if they came from an epley style or not, though. bill starr's "the strongest shall survive" used the clean. reg park used the olympics and had a program he put aspiring weightlifters onto. pretty much most of the lifters of all types (strength, athletics, bodybuilding) used the olympics prior to three developments: (1) powerlifting as a sport emerging in 60s to prominence in the 70s, (2) widespread use of steroids in bodybuilding (i do mean WIDESPREAD and not "there's a logistical possibility it was used") starting in the 70s, (3) bodybuilding competitions no longer requiring any demonstration of athleticism or strenght.
for me, it's a fun hobby and i'm lifting for health and strength, so i generally follow athletic templates
Parker Gray
I have to use them because they give compression to my patellar tendon and I'll be in pain if I don't.
Justin Miller
It’s massively helpful in training for most sports, I use it for Rugby. Not to mention it’s a sport on its own.

I don't lift for physique and I don't want to be a fat PLer
Sebastian Campbell
Jesus, man. Let me give you a quick rundown into what weightlifting is.
To begin with, in order to master the lifts you must have a really good mobility and flexibility. If you want to progress you also need to progress in strength. This means that training oly requires you to improve.
Personally I started because I love weighlifter mode, but then I stayed because it is fun as fug. There's a joy in seeing yourself improving constantly (and in having amazing legs).
Adrian Wilson
>To begin with, in order to master the lifts you must have a really good mobility and flexibility. If you want to progress you also need to progress in strength. This means that training oly requires you to improve.
I played around with a few weightlifting positions today and realized just how bad my flexibility is.
>Involuntarily contort my back and hip angles like a low bar squat when trying to high bar it >Keep dropping the bar on the spine of my neck instead of upper back when repping the overhead snatch position. >Pins and needles in the arms when overhead squatting.
do you feel excessive pressure in your arms, elbows, or shoulders when you try to catch the bar?
Angel Morris
Your catch strength isn't good enough. Not even memeing, these muscles and ligaments are not often worked outside of the snatch, just spend a lot of time in the bottom with weights you CAN catch.
Kayden Robinson
How was your training today?
Oliver Turner
>80kg snatch >93kg clean & jerk SEND HELP
Ayden Gray
took me like 8 months just to get the flexibility to OHS 1pl8, don't sweat it
nope, not at all, it's more a question of my lower back rounding and losing the bar forward
ye sadly that's probably right, I also have a bad habit of forgetting to engage glutes standing it so I step forward
Oly lifting builds muscles, don't fucking kid yourself. I was a powerlifting/bodybuilding faggot for two years and thought I'd lose all my gains doing oly, but everything has got bigger, especially my legs, back, and traps. Even my arms are bigger from all the snatching, push pressing, etc. Chest hasn't decreased because I still bench for aesthetics.
Aaron Young
If you can't work into the hole catch the bar at rack position then squat to depth. Then work on removing the hesitation of squatting.

eat well and stay active, you're going to lose progress its just a matter of mitigating it
Blake Cooper
It's fun and it keeps you fit and strong. Physique/bodybuilding isn't the only way to look good (plus old school bodybuilders used to compete in weightlifting!). General strength programs don't promote them because they aren't as accessible as machine fluff and pump bullshit. Even the idea that you should do powerlifting movements is new in the physique world - those guys are mostly clowns and scammers
Weigtlifting promotes a generally athletic look, and most people would say that athletes are attractive
Oliver Hughes
I fucking hate morning sessions
Connor Johnson
I love those. Feel so good the whole day after lifting
Juan Long
is behind the neck press safe?

yeah
Luke Sullivan
what about impingement?
Dylan Lee
Me too, have to warm up too much
Jackson Reyes
doesn't happen for me
Josiah Roberts
do shoulder dislocates to get good mobility then they are safe to do, people get impingement because of a lack of mobility
Asher Turner
>Just curious why are you guys into Oly lifting?
I do clean and jerks because they allow me to get the heaviest weight possible overhead under my own power. Which is fun, and makes for a fetching Instagram pic.
I do snatches because I hate myself and deserve to suffer.
Evan Hernandez
snatching is easy and fun once you know how to do it correctly even relatively heavy weight (>100%bw) feels pretty much effortless when technique is sound
Brody Jenkins
Can I learn weightlifting my myself like I did powerlifting or do I need a coach?
Gavin James
You can certainly teach yourself to be moderately proficient, to the point of making PRs without hurting yourself, with a little effort and discernment.
But don't pass on a competent coach if one is readily available.
Jose Butler
You can do so by yourself, but progress will be most likely slow and you will may start bad habits which’ll continue for a long time that a good coach can prevent in a few seconds. The coach meme exists for a reason though.
Evan Morris
sounds good I dont think there is a good coach but ill search anyway dont wanna become a champion or something lmao just for fun but dont wanna hurt myself can i do both powerlifting exercises and weightlifting in the same routine or is it too taxing?
Ayden Martin
what are bad habits? cant i just post webms here and u judge my form? also
Hey thanks for all the replies guys not going to respond to every single dude, but y'all clarified that pretty well for me. Definitely will give those lifts a shot when I get the opportunity to have someone teach me them. The benefits seem pretty close to what my goals are and I really like lifting so I may as well try more stuff out.
Lucas Campbell
Honestly if you wanted an online coach look for one from East Coast Gold that will do remote coaching for you
They will write you a program, and give you feedback on lift videos you send in
Adam Cooper
ye I look forward to snatches, even at their heaviest it's still babby weight compared to squat
C&J sucks
stomp is wasted energy but ultimately nbd. Also idk who made that video but painting it in broad strokes is retarded. Klokov is russian and slides his feet.

Hi
John Carter
I'm getting mixed opinions and theories about my squat from /plg/ and regular fit. I posted a thread asking if my squat is good. I am however confused about conflicting theories about being more upright, being more forward, sticking my butt out more, locking my hips forward more... I don't know exactly what I should be doing, and because I'm getting multiple different answers, I thought I might as well try /owg/ to see if any of you pro squatters can tell me how I should be squatting.
I don't need oly depth or anything, and I'm not planning to compete, I just want a safe, regular ass squat that won't fuck me up long term. So far the only advice that seems to be the general consensus is that I should hinge my back less, stick my chest out more, and lose the belt.
You want to do the powerlifting exercises, in some form or fashion, because they can be loaded heavy enough to get you stronger in ways that will drive your "Fast" lifts. The fast lifts can't be loaded heavy enough to really drive that fundamental strength.
But you obviously won't be able to manage full crazy PL volume while dedicating significant time, effort, and recovery to training the fast lifts. The PL lifts are more like "accessories," in the same sense that accessories for the PL lifts help strengthen the lifts PLers care about (in that case, the PL lifts), the PL lifts help strengthen the lifts Olympic lifters care about (the Olympic lifts). That being said, bench press is only tangentially useful, and sumo deadlifts are fucking useless. And most Oly lifters squat high bar.
You can also just become of member of the Super Total Ascendant Race (STAR) like the rest of the cool kids, and see if you can get dat dem dere 2,000 lbs Snatch+C&J+Squat+Bench+Deadlift
