Men are, in general, scary to women. Especially men of your size and appearance, OP. So you might be right that you're too intimidating, but not so much in a sexual way, but in a way that makes them a little naturally anxious.
Because of this, you'll just have to become better at "disarming" people so to speak. Go out of your way to seem more approachable. Smile and laugh more, be kind. I have sort of the same problem as you, OP, so it always takes that extra step of me demonstrating that I'm not some brutish asshole to get people to put their guard down.
