Muscles do somewhat work as protection from certain strikes (obliques for say getting kicked/punched in the ribs), and more mass behind a punch can help tremendously. although any skilled strike can make your gains meaningless and you get knocked out. Martial arts are a fun way of getting through cardio, running sucks but why bother doing that when I can go to a class and go at a punching bag to burn some calories.
